An Invitation to Piyut

There's a terrific website devoted to introducing the world of piyutim... to the world. The Piyut website explores historical and contemporary versions of piyut: the texts, the music, the history, and the various styles from different places in the world. There is a collection of piyutim and melodies which is also searchable. There is a list of melodies, articles, website radio, and lists of new recordings. There is also a section devoted to liturgical texts not always included with the traditional groupings of piyutim. Many of the tables are in Hebrew, but the site doesn't carry a full mirror in English of all the Hebrew pages. Let's say you want to hear "Ma Nishtana". You can get the text, and also hear it in the Egyptian, Kurdistani, Babylonian, Tunisian, Yemeni, Moroccan, and Ashkenazi styles. You can also get some information on the poets of the texts of the piyutim. This site, sponsored in part by Avi Chai, is an excellent site for anyone curious to learn more about the world of Jewish piyutim. (also spelled with 2 y's... Piyyutim, if you're going to Google or look it up on Wikipedia).

JewsRock

The JewsRock.org website has a lot of interesting bits, including all sorts of biographical information on rockers who are Jewish,.. or at least had a Jewish parent. At any rate, coolness is part of the ambience. Too bad the gig doesn't seem too updated since they've had their flame of fame in the sun -- mainly due to a lawsuit over the name "Jewish Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" . However, you can still learn a lot. Take the who's a Jew quiz,... and read some good bio blurbs on the, (now dubbed) "Challah Flame" (the pun obviously by guys dealing with way too many soundex files and a major lawsuit to boot ).

Ensemble Me la Amargates Tú

Check out the music from the website of Ensemble Me la Amargates Tú. It's quite well done with the combination of well known Ladino songs and period instruments.

"Ensemble Me la Amargates Tú was founded in the year 2006 as result of the musicians' eagerness to gather and play songs from the distant past. Ladino songs, a tradition that was carried forth from generation to generation has today become a symbol of the Jews who lived in Spain until the 15th century, and has spread into different places of the world. At present Sephardic music is quite common, and always differs depending upon the country. Me la Amargates Tu has decided to combine principles of the folk Ladino tradition as well as musical elements of the period."
The ensemble believes that the use of instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque periods are in accordance with period performance practice."

I Hear America Singing integrates the collections, commissions and live concerts of the Library of Congress, allowing users to discover the Library's music and performing-arts collections through a single gateway on the Web. The site brings together thousands of materials digitized from the Library's vast collections of sheet music, sound recordings, moving images, manuscripts, photographs, and oral histories, along with essays by Library staff and other leading researchers in the performing arts. It showcases the world-renowned tradition of live performing arts at the Library by featuring cybercasts of new concerts and offering a wide selection of historic concerts from the archives, including premieres of important works of contemporary classical music. It makes education a vital component by cybercasting performing arts-related symposia and panels held at the Library and making them available to users. I Hear America Singing will also become a "virtual community" for scholars, musicians, and music aficionados. Researchers will be able to comment online on the materials presented and share their own conclusions and insights about them. Content appealing to the K-12 community of teachers and students will be added in future releases. The debut release of I Hear America Singing offers the following special features: *Selections from jazz legend Gerry Mulligan's collection at the Library of Congress, including his previously unreleased oral autobiography, original scores and manuscripts, and recordings *"Life in Nineteenth-Century Ohio," a capsule example of how music reflects social history based on the lively musical life of Cincinnati a century and a half ago *"Patriotic Melodies," which features the stories behind of some of America's most important national songs *Walt Whitman's poem "I Hear America Singing," with an interpretation by the Library's poetry specialist and a reading of the poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins *A collection of historical sheet music published from 1800 to 1922 Forthcoming additions to I Hear America Singing will include concerts performed at the Library of Congress, including specially commissioned pieces and cybercasts; Civil War sheet music; and African-American popular music from the early twentieth century.
