News: Zamir Choral Performed At White House

Zamir Choral Performed At White House On Monday evening, December 10, 2007, the Zamir Chorale, under the direction of Matthew Lazar, entertained President and Mrs. Bush, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff and a select group of additional guests at the annual White House Hanukkah celebration .Cantor Alberto Mizrahi was featured soloist.
,br /> The Chorale appeared at the candle lighting ceremony which was led by Ruth and Judea Pearl, parents of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Later, at a lavish East Room reception, Zamir sang four more selections. Judea Perl joined the choir in performing the final number for all in attendance. The President was most gracious, shaking the hand of every member of the choir and even taking a moment to share some words with Matthew Lazar. Come Light the Lights for Free

Some readers may be interested in a new original song for Hannukah that's available for free online. The link was sent to me by an anonymous person who claims not to be a professional musician. She wrote the song for her kids in American pop style. It's at purevolume.com. You have to "search" for "artist" name "Hannukah". The song is called "Come Light The Light" and can be played or downloaded without charge. You be the judge.

"La ISTORIA de PURIM" Jewish Music and Poetry in Renaissance Italy

Present
Ensemble Lucidarium
"La ISTORIA de PURIM"
Jewish Music and Poetry in Renaissance Italy

The Ensemble Lucidarium, a famous international group of scholar musicians specialized in the works of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, will perform: "La Istoria de Purim," Jewish music and poetry from the Italian Renaissance, which was awarded first prize in 2004 by the European Association for Jewish Culture. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, northern Italy was a meeting place for three separate Jewish communities: Ashkenazi, Jews coming from northeastern Europe, Sephardic Jews from the Iberian peninsula, and Italikim who had been in Italy since the days of the Roman Empire. The music from this period is characterized by a fertile exchange of ideas and culture between Jews and gentiles. The texts transcribed into the Hebrew alphabet in four-verse stanzas are written in the colorful Jewish vernacular spoken in the Po valley during the sixteenth century. The rhymes were typical of the songs performed to celebrate the festival of Purim by recounting the story of Queen Esther. Ensemble Lucidarium has reconstructed the music through painstaking research into sixteenth-century music and oral traditions still alive in certain areas of the Tuscan and Emilian Apennines.

This concert has been organized with the support of Congregation Beth Shalom of Naperville and E.A.J.C. (European Association for Jewish Culture).

Hard Rockin' Hamentashen, KFAR Jewish Arts Center's Purim

Purim is the Jewish Mardi Gras, where people get decked out in costumes, throw parties and get absolutely smashed. And while you won't find people flashing for beads on this holiday (Orthodox Girls Gone Wild! Show us your ELBOWS!), traditional celebrations take literally the instruction to celebrate until one can't tell the difference between Mordechai, the hero of the Purim story, and evil Haman.

Two Jewish rock bands, the Ari Ben Moses Band and The Moshe Skier Band and will be presented at Subterranean, a well-known, three story Wicker Park lounge and music venue.
9pm - 1am Saturday March 26th
Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave.
$12 in advance (ticketweb.com) $15 at the door
more info at http://www.kfarcenter.com
call 773.550.1543 or email jewishfringe@kfarcenter.com

The Purim story, found in the Scroll (Megila) of Esther, is read aloud at synagogues, where costumed revelers cheer Mordechai and drown out the name of Haman and between the cheers and jeers, a lot of drinking is done. Rarely, however, do Purim celebrations get held at music clubs featuring rock bands.

Hard Rockin' Hamentashen, KFAR Jewish Arts Center's Purim celebration, is a change from the norm, then. The alternative Purim party will feature two Jewish rock bands, the Ari Ben Moses Band and The Moshe Skier Band and will be presented at Subterranean, a well-known, three story Wicker Park lounge and music venue.

"Everyone loves Purim and hamentashen- its a fun holiday when everyone celebrates," says KFAR's Director, Adam Davis. "Last year our Purim concert featured the Rabbinical School Dropouts, and this year, we're taking it to another level. The music will be loud, the liquor will be flowing, and there WILL be costumes and hamentashen."

Hard Rockin' Hamentashen, named for the traditional pastry shaped like Haman's three-cornered hat, is the fourth event KFAR has held in Wicker Park. Ironically, Wicker Park has no organized Jewish presence, despite a growing Jewish population, and in some ways, KFAR's events in the neighborhood fill that void.

"There's no real Jewish presence in the neighborhood," comments neighborhood resident Jon Silver, "and KFAR events in Wicker Park always have a bit of an indie-rock edge that fits the spirit of the neighborhood, more so than Starbucks and The Real World, anyways." Vital Event Information:

About the featured acts:
The Moshe Skier Band
A power rock trio performing original Jewish music in a classic rock style. In addition to their searing original songs, the trio covers well known traditional melodies with spare, bluesy arrangements. The rock trio's razor- sharp edge emanates from guitarist Mendy Appel's blistering technique, hailed by Yossi Piamenta as "Amazing!" The band is led by bassist Moshe Skier, formerly of Shlock Rock and Kabbalah and rounding out the outfit is Dan Lawitt's precise percussion. The Moshe Skier Band will rip through your notions of Jewish music and rock you until you can't tell the difference between Mordechai and Haman.

The Ari Ben Moses Band
Reggae bass lines, Latin beats, Middle Eastern and traditional Jewish scales are punctuated by gritty funk grooves influenced by Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel and Ishmael Isaacs.

Lag B'Omer in Ithaca, NY

Ithaca: On Saturday, May 8th, promptly at 10 pm (after Shabbat), the Carriage House Café will present an evening of Jewish instrumental Klezmer music and Hasidic song as a part of the 'Crossing Borders' multi-cultural radio concert series, soon to be aired regularly on WVBR. Featured artists include Joel Rubin (clarinet, musical direction), Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl -- Eastern European Jewish hammered dulcimer), Rabbi Eli Silberstein (song and story) and The Cornell Klezmer Ensemble. The concert will be in honor of the Jewish festival of Lag Ba'Omer, which begins at sundown on that day. Lag Ba'Omer marks the 33rd day of the seven-week partial mourning period between the holidays of Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot, and is only day during this period where weddings, dancing and public performances of music are allowed to take place according to traditional Judaism.

Joel Rubin is currently a Mellon Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Music Department at Cornell University. For over two decades he has been one of the leading figures in the klezmer movement as performer, scholar, author and educator. Rubin directs the internationally acclaimed Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble, and was a founder of Brave Old World. He has documented the music of traditional musicians such as the Epstein Brothers, recipients of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA in 1998, and Moshe Berlin, Israel's most prominent klezmer clarinetist, performing together with them. Rubin studied with Richard Stoltzman and Kalmen Opperman and holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from City University (London).
Rubin is joined by Pete Rushefsky of Syracuse and Rabbi Eli Silberstein of Ithaca in a performance of Eastern European klezmer music and hasidic nigunim. Rushefsky is a leading revivalist of the tsimbl. Rabbi Silberstein has played an integral role in Ithaca's spiritual life for over two decades, and is an acknowledged expert on hasidic nigunim. Also featured on the program will be the newly formed Cornell Klezmer Ensemble under Rubin's direction. The ensemble, made up of Cornell students, staff and faculty, Ithaca College students, and other members of the Ithaca community, will be performing music representing the New York and Philadelphia klezmer traditions, drawing on repertoire as it was performed there during the 1910s and 1920s.
The performance begins promptly at 10 PM (after sunset) and will be recorded for a future broadcast of "Crossing Borders", a multi-cultural concert series that will begin airing weekly in June on 93.5FM, WVBR. The series will take place at the newly renovated Carriage House Café and will eventually be broadcast live. Denice Karamardian is the host of the series. Radio personality Aron Gutman will co-host for the Klezmer presentation.
The Carriage House Café will officially open for business in September of 2004. The mission of the Café is to promote multi-cultural exchange and awareness by providing hospitality and entertainment to the local and international community through cultural presentation of arts, music, cuisine and educational programming (often in collaboration with various community, corporate and university partners). The Carriage House Café is located at 304 Stewart Avenue, Ithaca.
