Study Jewish Music at SOAS

The School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of London, offers unique opportunities for the study of Jewish musics.

The SOAS Music department runs BA, MMus and PhD degree programmes; all focus on world music, with the opportunity to specialize in regional traditions including Jewish musics, and to receive high- level training in performance. In the BA, Music can be combined with language studies, Development Studies, Anthropology and many other academic disciplines, while PhD projects can be practice-led, fieldwork-based, or theoretical.

SOAS is the only university in the UK with a dedicated lectureship in Jewish music, established in memory of the late Jewish bandleader Joe Loss z"l. Course options include a survey of Jewish musics, specialised units in klezmer and in Israeli pop, individual research projects, and Jewish performance options. Students can also take courses from the wider Hebrew and Jewish studies syllabus. Further, in partnership with the Jewish Music Institute, Jewish music learning at SOAS continues outside the formal classroom, including weekly klezmer classes, new Jewish music workshops, concerts and of course Klezfest. SOAS students have access to the JMI library, housed at SOAS, in addition to the wide holdings in Jewish music within the SOAS library.

Professionals will have special lectures and hands-on workshop sessions as well as individual and ensemble masterclasses with Josh Horowitz, Frank London and others on composition and ensemble arrangements. There will be sessions on professional development with music industry leaders on how to make a demo and get a record deal; how to get gigs, how to present yourselves on stage, how to manage being a live performer and how to teach Klezmer.

KlezKamp 20

At: The Hudson Valley Resort and Spa, Kerhonkson, New York 2004 marks the 20th edition of KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts Program. And while this is our birthday celebration, KlezKampers are the ones who receive the gifts. Our theme, Doyres/Generations, explores how Yiddish culture and KlezKamp is passed through generations featuring KlezKamp doyres: Chana Mlotek and son Zalmen, mother/daughter Elaine Hoffman-Watts and Susan Watts, Anita Norich and father Isaac, Pearl Sapoznik and son plus others. Our anniversary gives us a chance to dip into our archives to show rare classroom videos of beloved KlezKamp teachers no longer with us, and to also issue a special commemorative 2-CD anthology highlighting 20 years of our incomparable staff concerts. more....

We are pleased to offer this year, expanded vocal music and Yiddish language programs and welcome new staff including choral director Eleanor Epstein, Parisian Yiddish language instructor Yitskhok Niborski, Canadian-Yiddish author Chava Rosenfarb and actor Hy (Khayim) Wolfe who will be interviewing and performing with Yiddish theater greats Mina Bern, Shifra Lerer and David Rogow. And as always, we honor the great klezmer masters of our generation German Goldenshteyn, Paul Pincus and Pete Sokolow. < /br>< /br> A change is our new home: the fully restored classic Catskill resort, the Granite Hotel in Kerhonkson, New York. Now called the Hudson Valley Spa and Resort(http://www.hudsonvalleyresort.com), a $30 million renovation has created the seemingly impossible: Hilton quality in a heymish Catskill location, a hotel, as my mother would say, mit ale pistshefkes (with all the extras), including wireless internet access, full health club, spa, indoor pool and luxuriously appointed guest and classrooms. The kitchen, headed by Executive Chef /Culinary Institute of America graduate Edward Kelly, produces abundant traditional regional favorites with attention given to vegetarian and children' menus, all under the strict supervision of Rabbi Gershon Kreuser of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. < /br>< /br> While much has changed, what has not is our commitment to creating an inspiring cornucopia of all things Yiddish: our full instrumental, vocal and dance program, klezmer jams, multi-tiered language sessions, history, literature, translation workshops, plus our unbeatable children and teen program. Evening events many of which are open to the public and broadcast on local public radio outlet WJFF (90.5 FM/ http://www.wjffradio.org) include after dinner family activities, concerts, cabarets, and dancing to live music until all hours. < /br>< /br> Since 1985, thousands of participants from around the world have made the pilgrimage to KlezKamp. This year, why not you? Come to the Capitol of Yiddishland.

Yiddish songs and dances in Regents Park London

When JMI KlezFest London opens on Sunday 8 August, all London hears about it - as the biggest UK klezmer band will assemble round the bandstand at Regents Park (its too big to be ON the bandstand) last year there were 69 players, this year we expect to break that record. If you are in or near London please bring your instruments and join us in the 'Inner Circle' (this is a Road Direction as well as an emotional state) from 3.00-6.00pm ...more!...

This picnic in the park comes after we have completed an intensive week's Yiddish course Ot Azoy! directed by Khayele Beer and with Pesakh Fiszman and Sonia Pinkusowitz which takes place at SOAS University of London, and at the very beginning of KlezFest London a week of intensive Music making, singing and dancing with the usual suspects. Over 100 musicians are registered, including 20 singers in our dedicated Jewish Song Summer School who will be studying with both Adrienne Cooper and Shura Lipovsky as well as other experts in the field of sephardi, Baghdadi, Hebrew and Art songs.

We follow this up in the autumn with weekly classes at SOAS in Jewish song, Klezmer music and also liturgical music, and Yiddish language. (you can also do under-grad and post-grad studies in Jewish music here at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) as SOAS has I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) the only fulltime lecturer in Jewish music anywhere in the world in a mainstream University Department of Music.

For more details of all these see on the Jewish Music Institute Website www.jmi.org.uk OR e-mail jewishmusic@jmi.org.uk .

College Course in Texas on klezmer

For Jewish music fans in the neighborhood of College Station, Texas this fall, the Department of Performance Studies is offering a new course that might be of interest: MUSC 200: INTRODUCTION TO KLEZMER MUSIC < /br> Dr. Jeffrey L. Wollock (Visiting Scholar in Performance Studies) < /br> MWF 10:20-11:10 in Room 402A Academic The Music Room < /br> For more information, please contact Dr. Wollock: < /br> Wollock@nativecouncil.com>

The klezmer was the traditional wedding musician of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. As versatile folk professionals, they performed at other functions both Jewish and non-Jewish. The distinctive music of the klezmer came to this country with the great East European Jewish emigration of the late 19th-early 20th century, taking root mainly an New York and Philadelphia. By the 1970s it had nearly died out, but the last 25 years has seen a revival of so- called klezmer music as an international phenomenon. This course will explore the history, musical forms, and cultural context of traditional klezmer music, as well as such cultural phenomena as adaptation, assimilation, social memory, revival, and world music.

KlezKamp December 2004!

KlezKamp , www.livingtraditions.org, has updated their website and has added two new features: Photos of KlezKamp 19 (2003) and a new section of links to our favorite websites relevant to Yiddish and Klezmer which will certainly be of interest. Please visit our website often and let us know what you think.

Sabina Brukner,Associate Director of Living Traditions, writes: "Tayere Khaverim, It is a pleasure to write to you in my new position as Associate Director of Living Traditions. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you as we work together to preserve Yiddish language and folk culture and to incorporate it as a relevant part of Jewish cultural identity. We will try to keep it up to date to give you the latest information about all of ur projects. Soon to come is a centralized Klezmer Performance database which will allow you to search for information about performances by your favorite artists, searchable by location, date and performer. We are currently in the midst of planning a KlezKamp 2004 Twenty years! Biz hundert tsvantsik! In order to celebrate this milestone properly we need your help. Please send us your photos, audiotapes, videotapes, art projects and other memorabilia from your times at KlezKamp. We will use them in our various retrospective projects, including a website, exhibits at KlezKamp and, of course, the special KlezKamp 20 zhurnal. Send us copies or duplicates, if possible, and clearly label any items you will want returned. Save the dates December 26-31, 2004 and be sure to join KlezKampers and staff from the last 20 years at the Swan Lake Resort Hotel in the Catskills. Details of the program will be available soon after Labor Day. As you read in our Pesakh mailing, we are also producing a of a Best of KlezKamp 2-CD anthology which will be available by the beginning of KlezKamp this year. A crack group of KlezKampers have listened to all existing tapes of KlezKamp performances to find the treasures that will appear in the collection. It?s going to be great. We need your financial support to make this CD project happen, of course, so if you have not already sent in your response card to the mailing, please do so now. If you donate $100 or more above membership dues, you will receive an advanced copy of the anthology and your gift will be acknowledged in the accompanying booklet. That you participate is more important than the amount of your gift. Please help support this great project. We are so proud of the community that has been created through KlezKamp and Living Traditions. You are us. We want and need your input, suggestions and feedback. Please feel contact me anytime at Sabina@livingtraditions.org, call me in the Living Traditions office (212) 532-8202, or write Sabina Brukner, Living Traditions, 45 East 33rd Street, Suite B-2A, New York, NY 10016. I look forward to hearing from you.
A sheynem dank,
Sabina Brukner
