Background information on Celebrate With Song 2008

In the past ten centuries Jewish texts have been set to plainsong and polyphony, and used in motets, cantatas and oratorios, Jewish composers have written in styles ranging from the late-Renaissance to the contemporary. This music provides the focus for the Zemel Choir’s second ‘Celebrate with Song’ event in collaboration with The Spiro Ark. It will culminate in a concert at St John’s, Smith Square on June 15th 2008. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate our rich choral heritage. We welcome singers and audience members, Jews and non-Jews – anyone, in fact, with a love of music and a desire to experience music both old and new.

‘Celebrate with Song’ was launched in 2007 to enhance the profile of mixed-voice Jewish choral music. It is aimed at two groups of people: singers and audiences. We ex-tend an invitation to anyone with experience of choral singing (however limited) to come and sing with us. We will be holding workshops for groups of Intermediate and Advanced choral singers on the 1st of June and the morning of the 15th of June, and all these singers will participate in the grand concert on the 15th. Our workshops are led by experienced choral directors, and also feature an opportunity to brush up on vocal technique with a trained, professional vocal coach.

Audiences are invited to come to our concert on June 15th. For those who usually experience Jewish music in synagogue, this is an opportunity to hear something different. For those who love listening to choral music in the concert hall, but are a little tired of Bruckner, this is an opportunity to hear music by composers such as Rossi and Sulzer, Grossi and Bernstein. The concert will feature performances by the Zemel Choir and the choir of JFS, as well as special performances by our workshop participants. The 2007 ‘Celebrate with Song’ was met with great acclaim, from both audiences and partici-pants. Spurred on by this, we have arranged a second event for 2008.

Melodia Women's Choir in Manhattan with Becca Schack World Premier

The Melodia Women's Choir will present an all female performance of Vivaldi's Gloria in D Major and contemporary works, including the world premiere of Becca Schack's new commissioned piece "In My end is My Beginning" based on a text by T. S. Eliot. The concert is being held
Saturday November 17 at 8 PM, and
Sunday, November 18 at 3 PM at
St. Peter's Church,
346 West 20th Street, New York City, New York.
Melodia will be joined by an all-women instrumental chamber ensemble.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
For information, call (212) 252-4134, or visit
www.melodiawomenschoir.org.

Melodia Women s Choir, the 32-voice ensemble praised by Margaret Juntwait for their ringing tones, will perform baroque and contemporary works, plus the world premiere of Becca Shack s new commissioned work In My End Is My Beginning. The centerpiece of the program, conducted by Cynthia Powell, will be Antonio Vivaldi s Gloria in D Major, RV589. Many scholars believe that Vivaldi originally composed his Gloria for the women and girls of the 18th century Ospedale della Pietà (hospital/orphanage), where he was working at the time as composer and music teacher. Melodia will be giving a rare performance of the Gloria as it would have been performed in Vivaldi s time.

Becca Schack s In My End Is My Beginning is a piece in four movements based on excerpts from T.S. Eliot s Four Quartets, and contemplates the fragility of life. The composer has written numerous classically-driven pieces for full orchestra and chamber groups. She was a finalist in the 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Electronic Category) and she received honorable mention in two ASCAP Young Composers competitions, the first one at age eleven. Her compositions have been played by members of the New York Philharmonic and she has performed at the Apollo Theater and Lincoln Center in New York, as well as in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London.

The balance of the program will include:
Wir Eilen Mit Schwachen from Cantata 78, by J.S. Bach; Five Hebrew Love Songs, by Eric Whitacre (poem by Hila Plitmann) She Weeps Over Rahoon, by Eric Whitacre (poem by James Joyce) Lift Thine Eyes from Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn

Melodia Women s Choir creates, discovers and performs works for women s voices, and the repertory of the ensemble includes an eclectic mix of rarely performed classical and contemporary works. It has rediscovered numerous neglected works, presenting U.S. and New York premiere performances of pieces by Peter Warlock, E.J. Moeran, and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel in celebration of her 200th birthday. Their Spring 2007 concert, Shout Sister Shout! celebrated female composers and ensembles from 12th to 21st centuries, and their November 2006 concert featured the World Premiere of Allison Sniffin s new commissioned work: Hear Me With Your Eyes, based on love poems of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The group was founded in 2003 by Jennifer Clarke, an arts consultant who has worked with London s Royal Festival Hall, Royal Court Theatre, and companies in New York including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and Dancing in the Streets. The ensemble appeared last year in the Symphony Space Wall to Wall Stravinsky marathon.

Cynthia Powell, Melodia s Artistic Director and conductor since its inception, also serves as Artistic Director of Stonewall Chorale, has directed the choral program of Sarah Lawrence College and was a guest conductor at the Festival Internacional de Coros in Havana, Cuba. Equally at home as a pianist and organist, she has toured with Meredith Monk's opera, Atlas and Celebration Service in Europe, at the Spoleto USA Festival, the Walker Arts Center and Lincoln Center 2000 Festival and performed at the Spoleto, USA Festival in a revival of Monk's opera, Quarry.

An accomplished composer, conductor and lecturer, Eric Whitacre s works have entered the standard choral and symphonic repertories. Most recently, Whitacre has received acclaim for Paradise Lost, a cutting edge musical combining trance, ambient and techno electronica with choral, cinematic and operatic traditions. Winner of the ASCAP Harold Arlen award, this musical also won Whitacre the prestigious Richard Rodgers Award for most promising musical theater composer. He has received composition awards from the Barlow International Composition Competition, the American Choral Directors Association and the American Composers Forum. The first recording of his music was hailed by The American Record Guide as one of the top ten classical albums of 1997. In 2001, he became the youngest recipient ever awarded the coveted Raymond C. Brock commission by the American Choral Directors Association

Zamir Chorale Honors Cantor Jeff Klepper in Cambridge, MA

The Spring concert of the Zamir Chorale is honoring Cantor Jeff Klepper.
Sunday, June 3, 2007, 8:00 p.m., Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, MA

On June 3 the Zamir Chorale of Boston will celebrate its 38th year of performing inspirational Jewish music by honoring Cantor Jeff Klepper at its annual spring concert at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge at 8:00 p.m. For information about tickets:
http://www.zamir.org/ShalomRav

Zamir will share the stage with Cantor Klepper and Rabbi Daniel Freelander of Kol B’Seder for both a rousing and reflective concert featuring the beloved “Shalom Rav” (Abundant Peace.)

Cantor Klepper has strong Boston roots and even sang with Zamir in 1973. He has very fond memories of that time:
"I sang with Zamir for one precious year; it brought great joy into my life. By the time I left Boston to begin my cantorial studies, Zamir's music had seeped into my heart and soul. I know that Zamir's music made me a better song-leader, a better Jewish composer, and ultimately, a better cantor. "

Zamir invites the public to participate in honoring Jeff. His enthusiasm for and commitment to Jewish music have inspired many young people and enthralled audiences world wide.

Melodia Women s Choir Salutes Fanny Mendelssohn's 200th Birthday

Melodia Women's Choir at NOV 19 CONCERT IN NYC
Melodia Women's Choir of New York City presents a mystical November concert of darkly transcendent music drawn from the classical and contemporary lexicon. Featured in the program is a special 200th anniversary tribute to Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, sister of Felix Mendelssohn and an extraordinarily talented, if often overlooked, composer.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, the accomplished 32-member Melodia women's ensemble will present "Twilight in the Garden of Dreams" on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Church, Chelsea, 346 West 20th Street in New York City.

Melodia has invited The Momenta String Quartet to perform Mendelssohn-Hensel s "String Quartet in Eb" as an instrumental interlude at the concert.

Tickets to "Twilight" are $15 advance and $20 at the door. Tickets may be ordered on the website, www.melodiawomenschoir.org. (The Jewish Music WebCenter is particularly partial to the music of Fanny Mendelssohn.--JP)

Melodia will perform two partsongs by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, described by Powell as "spirited, passionate and full of life." Fanny Mendelssohn was born in November, 1805, in Hamburg, Germany, the granddaughter of the prominent Jewish scholar Moses Mendelssohn. From an early age, she displayed musical brilliance matching that of her brother Felix, who rose to prominence. Constricted by social mores and limitations of women, performances of Fanny's compositions were heard only in Mendelssohn salons and went largely unacknowledged. Yet, family archives reveal that by her death at age 41, Fanny had composed 250 songs, 125 piano works, four cantatas, and much instrumental chamber music.

Other selections in the program include Meredith Monk's "Quarry Weave" and Elena Kats-Chernin's "Memorial Rag." "This is music you won t hear on the beaten path," said Powell, who is also the Organist/Choirmaster of Temple Sinai in Tenafly, N.J.

The emergence of Melodia Women's Choir, founded in 2003 by Jennifer Clarke, reflects a rekindling of interest in the exploration, creation, and performance of women's choral music. Melodia frequently presents the work of women composers. More information about the life of Fanny Mendelssohn and the concert is on the website, www.melodiawomenschoir.org.

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, 2006. Under the direction of Rose Grausman, this mixed choir performs a very wide range of music, including classical, opera, jazz and musicals, as well as popular and folk music from all over the world. The S.J.C.S. regularly performs Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew folk music, Hebrew liturgical settings, and stunning Hebrew musical settings by composers from Rossi in the 16th century through Kurt Weil and Leonard Bernstein in the 20th, and has given premieres of hitherto unpublished choral works by Jewish composers.

A non-profit organisation, the S.J.C.S. performs regularly in concerts which support Jewish and general charities and gives free performances at Jewish retirement homes and activity centres.

Throughout 2006, the Sydney Jewish Choral Society will be performing several major concerts in Sydney. In preparation for this substantial year of activity, new members are being actively sought. Musical training, while obviously an advantage, is not a prerequisite for membership.

Enquiries regarding membership or performances can be directed to Anne at anne_lives@hotmail.com

Orthodox Choir to Sing in Wales

The Welsh Valleys will echo to the sound of traditional Jewish music in July 2005, when the first Orthodox choir from Israel participates in the 56th Llangollen International Eisteddfod. The Ramatayim Mens Choir of Jerusalem has been invited to participate in thisprestigious international choral competition before, but the dates have usually prevented their attendance. For more information about Ramatayim, contact Sarah Manning: sarah@globalvisionsisrael.com MORE...

The reason they weren't able to attend before is that they cannot participate during the traditional Three Weeks of Mourning for the Destruction of the Temple. This being a Jewish leap year, however, they are coming to the UK to represent Israel, along with competitors from more than 50 other countries.
The Eisteddfod is a world-renowned festival dedicated to the promotion of peace and friendship through music, as well as the pursuit of choral excellence, explains Ramatyims Muscial Director Richard Shavei-Tzion. We believe that we are the first orthodox Jewish mens choir to participate, and we are delighted to be able to bring our repertoire of classical Chazanut, Chassidic and Israel songs to Wales, to compete alongside the worlds best choirs. The Ramatayim Mens Choir takes its name from the Ramot suburb of Jerusalem where it first started 10 years ago. Its 30 members originate from Israel, the UK, South Africa, Australia and the USA, and they have performed together in concert halls and synagogues around Israel with some of the worlds leading Chazanim. While in Britain they will be giving concerts in Wembley for Spiro Ark and at Birminghams Israel Cultural Centre in aid of Magen David Adom.
Ramatayim has just released its debut CD, entitled 400 Years of Synagogue Music, comprising a seletion of music composed by famous composers from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo Celebrated 90th Birthday

(From Joods.nl, by Raya Lishansky, Translated by Irma Lopes Cardozo & Barry Mehler) http://www.joods.nl/archive/cultureel/muziek/JoodsNewsItem.2004-10-26.9494736971

With the Uilenburger Synagogue [in Amsterdam, Netherlands] bursting at the seams, Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo celebrated his 90th Birthday in concert with Santo Servicio, the choir of the Esnoga. The 17 man strong Santo Servicio[1] opened the concert with Baruch Habba, under the driven leadership of their director-singer Barry Mehler resurrecting it like a Phoenix after 63 years of silence. ... Read about it....

Prior to the official opening of the concert, Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo received congratulations and best wishes from many members of the audience. Under the melody of Baruch Habba, Hazzan Cardozo walked from the back of the Shul and joined the choir in full force. This was one of the many impressive moments of the evening. Lopes Cardozo sang in this choir from 1922 until 1939; first as a boy soprano and later on as a young adult until he received an appointment as cantor in Suriname in 1939.

Lopes Cardozo embodies the living memory of the musical culture of the pre-war Portuguese Jewish community. Throughout the evening he drew from his rich memory of fragments of synagogue music sometimes ushered with amusement from the audience, as he would say: I know it by heart! People in the hall softly hummed some of the well-known melodies.

In a conversation with Barry Mehler, Lopes Cardozo tells about Santo Servicio from before the war, a choir of volunteers, consisting of about 25 men and about 20 boys. Even famous singers like tenor Giacomo Aletrino were members of the choir. It was a touching moment when Hazzan Lopes Cardozo produced a small black leather-bound book. In this book you can find the complete Seder Hazzanut of the Esnoga. I copied the 140 pages from the original Seder Hazzanut when I went to the synagogue everyday with my father. This is a guide for the Hazzan for all services during the Jewish year; a kind of users-manual. You can find everything in it and I have added all the melodies of our tradition, so that I would not forget them. I knew that there was only a small chance that I would be able to get a job as Hazzan in Amsterdam. This little book traveled with me over the whole world, and now I am returning it home. Hazzan Lopes Cardozo presented this little book to Bram Palache, Parnas-member of the P.I.G. and one of the singers in the new Santo Servicio.

The evenings program was musically filled with Santo Servicio and a male quartet. The traditional settings of Halll for the 1st and 2nd day Passover were again and again sung with a clear and strong voice by the Hazzan. The vocal highpoint of the evening was when the four soloists sang, "Mizmor l'David" a composition by Victor Schlesinger. This music had not been heard in Amsterdam for more than 60 years and was now made possible thanks to the cooperation of composers granddaughter Anna Schlesinger, who personally attended the concert.

The concert came to a close with a composition of L.A. Benavente, Shir Hamagnalot l'David Samachti. Afterwards there was a reception where the large audience was given the opportunity to raise a (non-alcoholic) glass to the health of Abraham Lopes Cardozo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] It was assumed for a long period of time that the sheet music of the vocal cultural heritage of the Amsterdam Portuguese liturgy as it was sung by Santo Servicio before the war and was lost. A few years ago, boxes with scores from the unique music from the Esnoga were discovered. A part of the scores has been inventoried, catalogued and ready to be (re-) used for services in the Esnoga. Santo Servicio was re-established in 2002 and has already sung multiple times during services in the Esnoga under the direction of Barry J. Mehler. The choir took part in the great "Three Cantors" concert that took place in 2003 in the Esnoga.

Melodia Women's Choir Features Yehezkel Braun

Melodia Women's Choir of NYC,/b> will delight New York audiences with three exciting and rarely-performed works by Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun in its upcoming concert, November Song. The three works by the highly-regarded composer from Tel Aviv are written to songs and ballads by H.N.Bialik, Israels first national poet and one of the countrys most revered and influential writers.
The concert will be presented on November 20, 2004 at 7:30PM, at St. Peters Church in Chelsea (346 W. 20th St., between 8th and 9th Avenues) in New York City.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, the 24-member Melodia Womens Choir will perform the three works in Hebrew. Yehezkel Braun wrote the works expressly for womens voices. Rife with lyrical freshness, the Bialik ballads probe the passage of time in The Lovely Linden Tree, the wonders of natural mystery and the fears of aging in Neither Daylight Nor the Darkness, and the joy and burdens of love in With Window Opened Wide. Braun, a Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, was born in Russia and emigrated to Israel in 1922. He has taught in England, France, the United States and Germany, and is considered one of Israels finest musical treasures.

In honor of Braun, Melodia has been specially invited to concertize November Song (which also includes classical repertoire by Sir Edward Elgar, Serge Rachmaninoff and Rebecca Clarke) at Temple Sinai in Tenafly at the Sabbath service on Friday, November 19. Melodia's conductor, Cynthia Powell, serves as Organist and Choirmaster of Temple Sinai in Tenafly

New York audiences can hear November Song in a public performance on Saturday November 20, 2004 at 7:30 p.m., at the newly restored St. Peters Church, a landmark site on 346 West 20th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood.

Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door.
