Their differing roots and their multiple passion for music unites them: YAEL NAIM releases a second, four-handed album together with DAVID DONATIEN, as a new collection of graceful songs.
After the worldwide success of the feel-good album, released in 2007, YAEL NAIM unveils her second album today « She Was a Boy ». Closeted in a Parisian apartment for two years, YAEL NAIM and DAVID DONATIEN perfected Yael’s songs in Hebrew and English, which culminated in a commercial and artistic success (Victoire de la Musique 2008, for the Album of the Year World Music category).
Following the use of the song « New Soul » in a promotional advert for Apple, it entered the Top Ten on the US sales chart. Since then however, the Parisian flat has been turned into a studio; more space, but the same passion to make an album at their own pace. Having made great use of these past three years by playing anywhere where there was even a slight echo of their music, and to taste the pleasures of the fringe (a tribute to Joni Mitchel, on the Beatle’s album “Let it Be”, a collaboration with the National Jazz Orchestra and a representation at the Pleyel concert hall), YAEL NAIM has given her all to this process that she herself qualifies as a particularly intimate way to create songs. At the same time, DAVID DONATIEN involved musicians such as Thomas Bloch, Lionel, Stéphane Belmondo and the pianist Éric Legini.
Furthermore, the French artist Tété was invited to the banquet table of sessions, alongside the “eternally- young” tender singer, Spleen , Jacques Daoud and Yoed Nir (cellist), as well as the usual friendly crew of musicians that regularly join them on stage.* YAEL offers us a mix of gentle as well as heartbreaking songs, crossed with those that don’t resemble theirs like for example the light tempo of “Come Home”, or of their dreams in “My Dreams” and their certainties, using the richness of Balkan chords as in “She Was A Boy”, in which Yael, still just a child, encounters a young woman who is not like the others and not of their opinion. “I Try Hard” uses a mix of the artist’s words and that of the woman. At times, the album transports us to the world of cinema, “My Dreams”, and its underwater chorus’ are worthy of an Esther Williams aquatic ballet and she doesn’t hesitate to dive into her innermost soul: it’s in a bluesy, lamenting fashion that “Never Change” presents not the most flattering of self portraits.
We salute the jolting parade of New Orleans orchestras in “Mystical Love” that Lee Dorsey himself would have been proud of. The coming together of India and the West, the melismatic singing in “Man From Another Woman”, which ends by smiling at the young woman (lost in translation and lost in love) in “The Game is Over”. Finally, on “Today” and “If I Lost the Best Thing”, Yael and David haven’t hesitated in accompanying their singing with a simple violin or solo guitar in order to better preserve the intimacy of the songs. Strength and fragility, a trek around the world (jazz, variety pop, classical), and a soul-searching journey of self, here the voices and melodies vibrate within the compositions of Yael, and so does the listener.

I. Songs of exile
Anonymous (Sephardic, Jerusalem) Boray ad ana/Criador hasta cuando Creator, why have you imprisoned your Dove? Why have you put her in chains? She is alone, without her children, crying Father, Father, Father...
Al naharot bavel (Psalm 137)
By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept, When we remembered Zion. Upon the willows in the midst thereof We hanged up our harps. For there they that led us captive asked of us words of song, And our tormentors asked of us mirth: 'Sing us one of the songs of Zion.' How shall we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?
II. The Sacred Bridge
Anonymous (Gregorian, Ashkenazic) In exitu Israel/ B'tset Yisrael (Psalm 114, Latin and Hebrew versions) When Israel came forth out of Egypt,The house of Jacob from a people of strange language;/Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion...
Obadiah the Proselyte (12th century) Mi al har horeb (Eulogy of Moses)
Who other than Moses stood on Mt Horeb at sudy? Who other that Moses led my flock in the desert, bringing them forth water? To the heavens he came to God. Know, my people, 'That your light has come. The Glory has shone upon you.'
III. Jewish Minstrels in the Christian Middle Ages
Mathieu le Juif (13th century) Par grant franchise
I must sing to you, unfaithful lady who torments me. False lovers make true love perish; I have served you faithfully, yet you mock me. Why have you thus betrayed me? For your love I have forsaken my Law, my God. May God make your face so wrinkled and old that all will hate you, save me!
Sueskint von Trimberg (13th century) Wa heb'uf (melody: Der Wilde Alexander, 13th c.)
What sorrow is now thrust upon me, now that my noble patron is gone. Now I must flee the court, let my hair and beard grow long. I shall live in the old Jewry, with a long coat and hat. Slow shall be my walk, and sad my song.
Isaac Gorni (13th century) A poet's life (translated from the Hebrew) IV. Jewish folksongs of the Mediterranean
Anonymous (Morocco) En ciudad noble y encina (instrumental)
Yo hanino, tu hanina
I am Hanino, you are Hanina, these shall be our names, and the children born to us, Aman, will be like the moon and the sun, Derman, like the moon and the sun...
Morena me llaman
They call me the dark one, but I was born fair; I lost my color from travelling so much. Clad in green and scarlet, the betrothed girl speaks thus to her beloved. A ladder of gold and ivory was made for them to climb...The king's son calls me the dark one, and if he summons me, I shall go.
Anonymous (Balkans) La rosa enfloresce
The rose blooms in the month of May, and my heart saddens with the pains of love. The nightingale sings and sighs... Come quickly, O thou my soul, or else I shall die. Carpentras (18th century) Eftach sephatai berinah (Circumcision)
I open my lips with happiness. We shall sing tomorrow at dinner. I will praise God Highest on the tambourin and the violin... May the child being circumcised today become a wise man; may the exiles and the wanderers be returned; may the redeemer of Zion come!

*Opening Night: Sept. 13 Jake Shulman-Ment Band*
Violinist Jake Shulman-Ment is among the leaders of a new generation of Klezmer and Eastern European folk music performers. His versatility as a violinist, composer, improvisor, teacher, and folk music researcher has established him as one of the world's leading practitioners of the klezmer violin. As a child in New York, Jake's immersion in Yiddish culture and the klezmer revival movement, as well as rock, jazz, and classical music, formed him into an eclectic musician with multiple influences at work simultaneously. In an effort to explore more deeply the roots of the Jewish music he grew up with, Jake has done extensive research and study with Roma musicians in Romania and Hungary. He has synthesized his experiences and travels into an original sound, sometimes departing quite far into a realm of experimentation, but always remaining true to his deep roots in traditional Jewish music.

Leon Gurvitch Project feat. Special Guests aus den USA: Kantor Joshua Nelson „The Prince of Kosher Gospel“, Musical-Star Ethan Freeman
But the sketches seemed to belong together, afterwards, and to fit the solo cello - It is my way of holding each other in our loss."

Journal of Synagogue Music Online
As you may know, The Cantors Assembly has digitized it's past issues of the Journal of Synagogue Music online. They are available in PDF format at http://www.cantors.org/ca_jsm_docs.php along with their conference proceedings. These journal issues are searchable in a general way... that is, a search term will be found from the search in all documents with that word, but the reader will have to open the specific issues (pdf) and then use his/her Adobe Acrobat reader's "find box" to pinpoint the keyword in the document. The reader must search each of the documents separately for the search term. Still, this is a remarkable addition to the study of Jewish music and having access to so many interesting articles from the last half century from distinguished cantors and writers is a tremendous boon to Jewish educators and all of us interested in Jewish synagogue music.Ayana Haviv Website

Michael Chusid has collected websites dealing with the Shofar called "Hearing Shofar: The Still Small Voices of the Ram's Horn".. and wrote a book. He's been blogging stories, sermons, poems and tales, and hsitorical data about the Shofar for the last couple of years. You might also enjoy his tagging taxonomy about his blog, or some of the more arcane anecdotes. Well worth the browse and exploration.http://hearingshofar.blogspot.com/2009/11/links-to-shofar-websites.html
Joseph Achron Society focuses on publication
The Joseph Achron Society, led by Sam Zerin, put out a fundraising call for publication of Achron's works:the Joseph Achron Society fundraiser ends tonight! Online donations are quick and easy, and will help us publish the first edition of Achron's brilliant Paganini Caprice transcriptions!
You know as well as I do: more than half of Achron's important legacy has never been published -- despite high praise from the likes of Heifetz and Schoenberg -- and thus remains inaccessible to most of today's performers.
For the first time in almost 100 years, the Achron-Paganini Caprices will be easily available in print to performers world-wide! Let us work together. Help us with a tax-deductible donation today -- and receive a free score!
