Monajat featuring Galleet Dardashti
Thursday, September 15 · 8:00pm - 9:30pmGranoff Performance Center, Tufts University
20 Talbot Avenue
Medford, MA 02155
Monajat (Fervent Prayer) by innovative performer Galeet Dardashti, is inspired by Selihot, the poetic prayers of forgiveness recited during the month preceding the Jewish High Holidays according to the Middle Eastern tradition. Dardashti, a musician and anthropologist of Persian descent, re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic video projections by video artist and designer Dmitry Kmelnitsky.
As only one of six cities in the US where this dynamic concert will happen, the Boston Jewish Music Festival is very excited to have been selected by the Foundation for Jewish Culture to present this important new work along with our co-presenters, the New Center for Jewish Arts and Culture, the Tufts University Music Department and Tufts Hillel.
Tickets are $25 and are available through the New Center at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/cal/30895
The New Jewish Culture Network has received major support from the Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation. Additional support provided by the Milken Family Foundation, Sylvia M. Neil, and other individual donors.

Fund raiser for film
Dr. Nurit Jugend writes JMWC and asks to post this letter below about an upcoming documentary film : They Played for their Lives. http://www.TheyPlayedForTheirLives.comDear friends & family,
Imagine yourself in the year 1939, you re a young musician and music is the one thing that can save your life...
One of the most absurd and unbelievable phenomena during the Holocaust, is that while being Jewish condemned you to death, being a musician earned you respect and appreciation by the very same persecutors - the Nazis.
Our documentary tells these extraordinary stories of musicians who faced these exact circumstances: music was the one thing that could and would eventually save their lives and the lives of those they loved.
As we enter the final stage of filming, we need your help to complete the film.
We ve started a fundraising campaign http://igg.me/p/33015?a=34338&i=shlk to help cover costs of two remaining shoots by survivors from LA. Once we capture these last stories we will begin editing and post production, and shortly thereafter be ready to debut the film.
Preserving these remarkable stories for the future generations, and for the Jewish community as a whole is something that cannot be done without your support!
Please take a moment to visit our online fundraiser and consider making a 100% tax deductible donation. If donating is not an option, you can still help out in a huge way by spreading the word and posting this link http://igg.me/p/33015?a=34338&i=shlk on your facebook page, twitter feeds, your organization's website, and simply by sharing it with friends and family.
We have only 60 days to raise the necessary funds before the campaign is over!
Please pass this email to your family and friends.
Thank you for your attention!
My best wishes,
Dr. Nurit Jugend

Pitom (Where Jewish Music Meets Metal!!) avec André Daneau

Location: La Sala Rossa

Featuring: Yoshie Fruchter (guitar), Shanir Blumenkrantz (bass), Jeremy Brown (violin) and Kevin Zubek (drums)
More Info
Pitom is a Jewish jazz-punk-sludge-metal hybrid - the kind of music that could only come from a culture known for wandering. Coming off a successful first album on Tzadik records, which the Wall Street Journal called a "dazzling debut," Pitom continues to evolve their unique brand of music with their second release entitled, “Blasphemy and Other Serious Crimes." Composed by bandleader and guitarist Yoshie Fruchter as a sonic homage to the Jewish day of repentance, and produced by Pitom bass player Shanir Blumenkranz, "Blasphemy" is an intense exploration of the mental and spiritual intensity associated with this holiday. With its cacophonic guitar, surly heavy-metal bass and a soaring violin, the music is so ethereal that the listener needs those mosh-pit drums to rocket them back down to Earth. Pitom has performed all over the country and in Eastern and Western Europe including the Atlantique Jazz Festival in France, Otwarda Twarda festival in Warsaw, and Jewish music festivals in Washington DC, Detroit and New York.
Featuring: Yoshie Fruchter (guitar), Shanir Blumenkrantz (bass), Jeremy Brown (violin) and Kevin Zubek (drums)

Doors open at 7. Egypt 2000 at 8. Breslov Bar Band at 9.
What people are saying about "Have No Fear":
“This CD is the happy answer to the question, ‘Five Breslovers walked into a bar...’ This is a fun, fun CD.” -- Ari Davidow, Klezmer Shack
“Judging by this debut album, a formidable new band... The arrangements and interpretations lean towards funk and a very contemporary idiom, without ever losing the spiritual undertones and overtones of the Breslov material... The album is totally consistent and compelling, with not a weak track anywhere." -- Rainlore's World of Music
“There’s a remarkable range of music in this set, from meditative pieces like ‘Adir Ayom,’ to the full throttle rock ‘n’ roll religious devotion expressed in ‘Ani Ohev Et HKB’H,’ to the reggae of ‘Mi Yiten’...” -- Ottawa Jewish Bulletin
“The Breslov Bar Band is a perfect fusion of these two spheres — traditional Hasidic music on the one hand, and a thoroughly contemporary sensibility on the other... While the band moves between styles from song to song, the overall aesthetic is one of intelligent and energetic rock music, only with Jewish musical modalities rather than Blues as its foundation.” -- Ezra Glinter, The Arty Semite
“One issue we may face today, though is how to access the sounds of the Jewish people’s past... Without our musical heritage contributing to those of our generation who are currently producing musical output, we risk severing today’s Jews from works of the past. Fortunately, there’s groups like the Breslov Bar Band...giving new voices to old melodies.” -- Gideon Klionsky, Kfar Jewish Arts Center
