Klezmer clarinetist Margot Leverett joins forces with today's stars of klezmer and bluegrass to explore the shared musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes by Bill Monroe meet klezmer melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered. The resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny, soulful and footstomping.

Joel Rubin New CD Release Azoy Tsu Tsveyt

Joel Rubin along with Uri Caine, the masterful classically trained jazz keyboardist, will be releasing a new CD Azoy Tsu Tsveyt on July 26 2011. An article on FlipSwitch gives the background. (reprinted below).
To learn more about Joel and his music:
http://joelrubinklezmer.com/

CD will be released by Tzadik label: Tzadik CD 8163, New York 2011

Joel Rubin is Clarinetist and ethnomusicologist and is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Music Performance in the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Rubin is also on Jewish Studies faculty

Joel Rubin’s clarinet can trill like a sparrow, wail like the life of the party, and sing like a voice in sacred rapture. Deeply connected to the lost-and-found world of klezmer—he wrote one of the first major scholarly works about it—Rubin takes old-world frolics and hasidic songs, and interprets them with freewheeling verve and classical lyricism.

Now with Uri Caine, the masterful classically trained jazz keyboardist, Rubin savors centuries-old melodies and newly composed pieces on Azoy Tsu Tsveyt (Tzadik; July 26, 2011). The duo transforms the secular and sacred sounds of the Jewish world into an utterly contemporary vision embracing everything from the funkiest Rhodes lick to the intensity of modern minimalism.

As a dedicated academic researcher, ethnomusicology professor at the University of Virginia, and experienced music educator, “I’ve often been pigeonholed as a traditionalist, but I’ve never tried to play as if I were from the 19th century,” Rubin reflects. “I’ve always played contemporary music and been moved by avant-garde jazz and classical approaches. Everything telescopes, the traditional and the edgy.”

Azoy Tsu Tsveyt spans the broad range of Rubin’s musical experience. Moving between virtuosic solos and calibrated understatement, Rubin and Caine reimagine klezmer chestnuts, hasidic nigunim (songs of spiritual elevation), and works by contemporary Jewish composers straddling the jazz, klezmer, and classical realms.

Rubin’s wide-reaching, groundbreaking sound will also be featured at a retrospective concert October 11, 2011 at 8:30 pm at Sixth Street Community Synagogue (325 E. Sixth Street in Manhattan, as part of the East Village Klezmer series). Joining Rubin will be tsimbl (hammered dulcimer) player and longtime collaborator Pete Rushefsky, in an evening paying homage to Rubin’s thirty-year contribution to the klezmer revival and contemporary music.

+++ Rubin grew up hearing the sounds of many musical worlds—the Yiddish and Slavic folk songs played by his Ukrainian-born grandfather; the opera and contemporary classical recordings of his other, native New Yorker grandfather; the Coltrane and Miles records that fascinated him as a boy. A talented classical clarinetist, Rubin moved away from a career as an orchestral player in favor of the blossoming underground of klezmer, a movement quietly expanding on the East and West Coasts in the 1980s.

Introduced by some Boston musician friends to the seminal work of klezmer clarinet whiz Dave Tarras, Rubin was intrigued and began learning repertoire from old recordings. He was soon an accomplished performer, landing spots on Prairie Home Companion and teaching gigs across the U.S. and Europe.

Over the next several decades, he found himself picking up tunes from klezmer elders, digging into their straightforward attitude and their unique feel for phrasing. Rubin sat beside the imperturbable Sid Beckerman, who would plow through an hour-long block of handed-down tunes without missing a beat. While researching a book on klezmer, Rubin began collaborating with klezmer clarinet master Max Epstein, who demonstrated a special sense of rhythm vital to the early 20th-century feel of klezmer.

“Max was already about 78 when I first started working with him,” Rubin recalls. “So he was not in his prime, but he was still amazing and had made these wonderful recordings in the 1940s and 50s. It was hard to define, but Max had a really free approach to the beat. He used really fluid phrases with lots of notes that shifted around the rhythm and across bar lines.”

Rubin and Caine channel this swing on tracks like “Kiever,” an old David Tarras tune, hinting at the good-time intersection of klezmer and Caine’s background in Philadelphia’s jazz scene.

Rubin also stumbled on another trove of klezmer creativity among hasidic musicians he met almost by chance. While researching old 78 recordings at a Jerusalem library, a Hasid approached Rubin and asked if he spoke Yiddish. Rubin did, and the two struck up a friendship that led Rubin to a whole scene full of musicians working in the 18th- and 19th-century European Jewish traditions maintained and expanded in Israel’s hasidic communities.

These often ecstatic, transporting songs resonated deeply with Rubin, who began exploring them, both in collaboration with singer Rabbi Eli Silberstein, and alone, as a source of compositional inspiration. The lyrical quality of traditional nigunim shines on “Nign for Shabbat and Holidays,” as Rubin and Caine unfold the melody’s delicate, stately beauty.

Rubin and Caine connected after repeatedly running into each other on stage (Caine was touring with Don Byron, Rubin with the ensemble he led). Equally at home playing Schumann with a major orchestra and leading a jazz trio, Caine could easily find engaging foils for Rubin’s mix of ancient and newly minted tunes, sometimes turning to his Fender Rhodes, and sometimes (on “Yiddish Soldier”) balancing Rubin’s bright clarinet with rich Hammond organ.

The unexpected blend of timbres adds fresh depth to contemporary compositions as well as traditional melodies. Rubin’s musical contribution to Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, ultimately left on the cutting room floor, gains a new life and meaning with Caine (“The Pianist”). On “Yiddish Soldier,” Rubin and Caine intertwine a World War I-era klezmer classic with a tune written by former Klezmatic Alicia Svigals.

The duo pays tribute to Rubin’s late, great classical teacher, Kalmen Opperman, who got his start as a young boy hanging around New York’s Yiddish Theater and who composed “Ah Zoy,” revealing his unsung klezmer side. They take klezmer-inspired tunes by Steve Greenman (part of the gospel-inflected “Ahavas Oylam/Eternal Love”) and young clarinetist Michael Winograd (“New Khosidls”), who has explored both Jewish roots music and classical minimalism.

Regardless of their origins, the pieces reveal the intuitive musical connection between Rubin and Caine, a connection that vibrates with the spontaneity of two well-seasoned musicians jamming for the joy of it. “Playing with Uri immediately affected the way I would phrase the music,” Rubin notes. “I always try to find some common ground, to blend with whoever I’m playing with.”

Vera Lozinsky's new CD Wunderweg - Wondrous Way

Vera Lozinsky has a new Yiddish CD out, Wunderweg --Wondrous Way. She has a luscious, rich voice. Vira is a pleasure to hear, along with such superb interpretive powers. Log into her website and take a listen. I think you'll enjoy it immensely. --JMWC
http://www.viralozinsky.com/sitebuilder/images/WunderWeg_small-252x252.jpg "Vira Lozinsky is one of the leading voices among a new generation of Yiddish singers .She has performed at theatres and festivals throughout Israel, Europe, North and South America. Her debut CD “Vayte Shtern” has been nominated for the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards (IMA) / Best World Music album.

Vira was born in 1974 in Beltz, Moldova (Bessarabia), to a family of Yiddish artists. Her father Michael Felsenbaum founded the Yiddish theater of Beltz in 1989 and is a prominent figure in the post-Soviet Yiddish revival. Well known as a poet and playwright, he has written many of the songs in Vira’s repertoire. Vira’s mother Fania was also a prolific performer and singer of Yiddish and Romanian songs throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. Vira started playing the violin at the age of six, but her real passion was always singing. From the age of 13 until her immigration to Israel in 1991 she sang in the Beltz Yiddish Theater and also performed solo concerts throughout the former USSR.

After immigrating to Israel at age 16 she earned her BA in Musicology and Yiddish literature at Bar-Ilan University. In 2000 she graduated with honors from the vocal program of Israel’s prestigious Rimon school of Jazz & Contemporary Music. Perhaps the most significant event in her career occurred in 2002 when she met the great Yiddish singer Nechama Lifshitz, who has since remained her teacher and mentor.

An enchanting performer in every way, Vira’s mellifluous alto voice is powerful, warm, expressive, and pure. Her unique repertoire includes new material written especially for her, as well as Yiddish folk songs, songs of Bessarabian, Romanian and Polish Jewish poets, and of classical and modern Yiddish poets ."

A concert in Judeo-Spanish (Ladino, Haketía, Judezmo) of music as seen through the eyes of the Crypto-Jewish Community.

Starting with the forced conversions of 1391 that ravaged Spanish Jewish communities and culminating with the Expulsion Edict of 1492, the great community of Spanish Jews was decimated and splintered. Many converted, others migrated throughout the Mediterranean and to the Americas and the land of Israel. Those who converted and stayed in the Iberian Peninsula were confronted with five centuries of Inquisitional horrors and harassment.

This concert features music that was sung by Conversos in Europe, Spain and the Americas that kept them attached to their Judaism as well as modern compositions by their descendants. Songs from the community in Belmonte, Portugal, as well as from Anousi poets in New Mexico and California linger together with prayers kept through the generations by women.

In our generation we are witnessing the return of unprecedented numbers of descendants of Conversos back into Judaism. This concert is dedicated to them and their strength in withstanding the test of time.

Internationally renowned singer and researcher of Judeo-Spanish, Vanessa Paloma, on medieval harp and vocals will be accompanied by composer and performer Ariel Lazarus on guitar with percussion accompaniment

Hava Nagila Historical Collections

Along with the documentary made by Roberta Grossman and Marta Kaufman that aired on PBS in 2010, there have been a few historical collections putting up materials about Hava Nagila, the ubiquitous folk tune that has become part and parcel of the American Jewish experience. Here's some links to the history, video and archival materials that may be of interest to our readers.

First, the video, (fundraising promo about the PBS special from 2010): (about 10 minutes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=molJ3Y6z97g

Second, the archival materials published on Flickr from the Jewish National Library in Jerusalem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26577116@N04/sets/72157605304880455/

Images from, Sadagora, hometown where the melody was traced: http://pics.livejournal.com/edward_tur/pic/00320q7e

For years, the song text was attributed to Moshe Nathanson, but this claim turned out to be untrue. Later in life, Nathanson wrote to Idelsohn and apologized about accepting credit for the text, which Idelsohn had written. (You'll still find wrong information about that on the Internet on my sites.). Idelssohn Thesaurus has been digitized at JNUL http://www.jmwc.org/announcements/2005/09/jewish_national.html but is also for sale today from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Thesaurus-Hebrew-Oriental-Melodies-Idelsohn/dp/0933676999

JDub Records Spin Out of Business

The Forward carries a good article about the closing of JDub Records, the independent Jewish music label that helped set the tone of Jewish music in the US in the last decade with a wave of recordings by new artists. Unfortunately, due to a combination of financial factors, including the slowdown of the music industry, JDub will close its doors. For those who help promote young artists, this is a blow. You can read about it here:

Different Trains by Steve Reich Performances in Jerusalem

A masterpiece by America's greatest living composer Steve Reich The Fleshquartet, part of the Jerusalem Season of Culture Series

When was the last time that a musical performance really took you to a different place? Different Trains, Steve Reich's timeless Grammy Award- winning composition is making its way, as we write, to the Kishle (a former Ottomon prison) at the Tower of David Museum, where Stockholm's very own Jewish Theatre will perform a fascinating visual interpretation of his work. Join us for a riveting and unique audio-visual experience.

Now thru July 21 For ticket Information: http://www.towerofdavid.org.il/English/General/Tower_of_David-Museum_of_the_History_of_Jerusalem The performances will premier on June 30 and will continue to July 21, running from Monday-Thursday and Saturday. Please book in advance: Tower of David Museum *2884 Bimot *6226 Entrance to the show involves a walk in the castle moat the stairs. We recommend comfortable shoes and warm clothes. Regretfully, due to the show's unique location, it is not accessible for people with dissabilities. The location has 120 sits capacity, unmarked. No Late entry. Photography, recording and documentation strictly prohibited. Different Trains by Steve Reich at The Jewish Theatre Stockholm From http://www.jerusalemseason.com/event/different-trains-steve-reichm: "It's not surprising that the New York Times crowned American Steve Reich "one of the most important living composers." His startling talent and fearless experimentation have produced a rich, varied and formidable musical repertoire.

Now Reich’s Grammy Award winning Different Trains (produced by The Jewish Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden) is on its way to Jerusalem, or more specifically, to an ancient Turkish prison, the Kishle, at the Tower of David; where it will be performed by Swedish string quartet The Fleshquartet amidst billowing glass shapes in play with light and shifting transparencies. Different Trains is a piece in three movements written for a string quartet. The melodies in the work are interwoven with recorded, spoken voices.

The prison, which was specially renovated for the event and holds a maximum of 120 people, was built above newly discovered archaeological finds dating back to the Second Temple period that will be revealed to the public for the first time as part on this visual concert.

The Fleshquartet (photo: Jonas Lindstr?m) performs this piece in a glass installation by artist Ann Wahlstrom. Large glass drops hover in the darkened room. Specially designed lighting units bring out refractions of different colors in them. Some drops are lying on the floor, but none has broken. “We wanted the objects to feel as large as people, so that the audience would be physically affected by them as well,” says Wahlstrom.

“I want the performance to be like an elegy", says Pia Forsgren, director of The Jewish Theatre and responsible for the stage direction as well as the concept and set design of the concert. "I want the images to transmit beauty, too. The beautiful glass shapes could be souls or bodies. Beauty here is a way of making communication possible, of allowing us to take in the unspeakable and of giving us strength". The visual concert also featured a new composition written by The Fleshquartet – Tears Apart – as a reflection and commentary on Reich’s Different Trains.

Steve Reich, one of the pioneers of minimalism, has had a strong influence on contemporary art music; the slow, repetitive rhythms, the phasing into different tempi, the shifts in canon. Different Trains was Steve Reich’s first work in which he “extracted” music from speech; he later developed this concept in The Cave and City Life.

The Fleshquartet has been active for over 25 years and has collaborated with a great variety of artists, including Robyn, Moondog and Elvis Costello. They have been involved in various productions for the stage, for instance dance performances by the choreographer Mats Ek and the Cullberg Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov and the Paris Opera. In 2007 they released the album Voices of Eden."

About the Competitions

The Israeli Music Competition was begun in 2008 and aims to familarise both professionals and students with the fascinating styles of Israeli music - a rich tapestry of sounds which produce a musical blend without equal; a fusion of Western musical idioms such as Klezmer (brought over with the first immigrants in the 1880s), and Eastern traditions brought by Jews from Arab countries.

The Ernest Bloch Music Competition was begun in 2009. Ernest Bloch (24 July 1880 – 15 July 1959) was a Swiss-born, American-Jewish composer and, since the 50th anniversary of his death was commemorated in 2009, the addition of the Ernest Bloch Music Competition to the Israeli Music Competition has drawn much worldwide interest. It has therefore been decided to make the Ernest Bloch Music Competition a regular part of the Israeli Music Competition.

Each competitor is asked to play a prescribed classical composition, a piece of their own choice, as well as an Israeli piece for the Israeli Music Competition and a piece by Bloch for the Ernest Bloch Competition.
