The seventh Helen and Sam Kaplan Foundation Commission for a new Concert Band composition written by a composer of Jewish heritage is outlined below. Any questions should be directed directly to Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, Director of Bands at Saint Mary¹s University of Minnesota. Contact information is provided at the end of this notice.

Amount of Commission: $5,000.00 plus travel/expense allowance for a campus visit at the premier of the composition.

Description of the Composition:
The work will be scored for standard concert band instrumentation, appropriate difficulty level for advanced high school bands and collegiate ensembles. The composition will be based on Jewish melodic material, either folk or religious sources.
Expectations of the composer:

The selected composer will interact with SMU band students regarding the composition. He/she will also be requested to attend the premier and present a lecture/seminar on the commissioned work and music composition in general.

Past commissioned composers have spent an average of 4 days in residency surrounding the premiere.

The composer will provide SMU a full score and one set of parts. Additional duplication of parts as needed for the ensemble will be the responsibility of the university.

The composer retains all copyrights and will acknowledge SMU¹s role in the commission of the composition upon future publication and/or distribution.

The SMU Concert Band will present the premier performance at a mutually agreed upon concert date during the 2012-2013 academic year. The composer will have the opportunity to conduct the premier performance if she/he chooses to do so.

Elie Wiesel in Concert Melodies and Stories from Long Ago

Elie Wiesel is best known as the one who will not let the world forget..... But for those of us who live in the world of Jewish music, we know Elie Wiesel has another voice....the voice of a singer...a lover of Jewish music....a choral conductor and, most of all, a friend and the honorary president of the Zamir Choral Foundation.

Those who were at the 2009 North American Jewish Choral Festival will never forget the moment that Professor Wiesel took the stage, his voice clear, strong, and poignant as he sang the songs of his youth.

Now you have the opportunity to recapture that moment when you join Elie Wiesel and The Matthew Lazar Singers and orchestra, live in concert, at New York's 92nd Street Y

A New Voice in Yiddish Music CD Release

A NEW VOICE IN YIDDISH MUSIC
"I Can't Complain But Sometimes I still Do"
Jane Peppler accompanied by Aviva Enoch
The League for Yiddish is pleased to announce that this wonderful new CD is now available from their online store The recording features 14 songs and and a waltz - a natural, intimate atmosphere, evocative and original. There are a few old favorites, some rarely-heard marvels, and two original compositions.
Track List Zing, bruder, zing! Birobidzhan Di elter Epes fun gornisht Gris, bagris Don un Donye A bisl libe Hilda's waltz Fraytik af der nakht Harbstlid Got fun Avrom Bobenyu Glik A yidishe khasene Ta'am haman

"The recording's greatest virtues are the selection of songs and the well-tailored folkish arrangements. The duo presented songs from various genres: songs which are rarely sung and even more rarely recorded. This is the first time this reviewer has heard the songs "Zing, Brider, Zing" (Sing, brothers, sing) and "Birobidzhan." The melody for "Birobidzhan" is utterly beautiful and the piano and fiddle twine in and out, with delicacy... Peppler composed a fine original melody for the folk song "Hob Ikh Mir a Mantl" (I Have a Coat) and added a new verse to the song "Gris, Bagris" (Greet, greet).... Since the majority of CDs today emphasize klezmer music, and not Yiddish songs, it's a pleasure to hear a recording which expresses such love of Yiddish word and song." -- Itsik Gottesman, Forverts, Nov. 11, 2010

League for Yiddish has music book available

The League for Yiddish is pleased to let you know about two books that are now available.
From Holocaust to Life: New Yiddish Songs,(2010) "Oh, what a joy, what a pleasure! This book, an anthology of the music and songs of David Botwinik, is a singular demonstration of a life devoted to Jewish continuity. Between the covers of this songbook... the sounds and melodies of the Jewish soul sing out. At a time when few people read Yiddish poetry, Botwinik's music breathes fresh life into these poems."-- Dr. Rakhmiel Peltz, Director of Judaic Studies Drexel University, Philadelphia

The book From Holocaust to Life: New Yiddish Songs is a collection of musical compositions by the Vilna-born Montreal composer David Botwinik. These are new Yiddish songs: solo and choral works, complete with English translations, piano accompaniments, and chords. Underneath the musical notation one can read the words in Yiddish as well as in transliteration in Latin characters. There are 56 songs in this 392-page hardcover book, among them, 10 original songs with both lyrics and music by David Botwinik. In addition, the book contains David Botwinik's music to the poetry of 25 Yiddish poets: Moshe Bernstein, Wolf Younin, Ida Massey, Leib Naidus, Abraham Sutzkever, J. I. Segal, Shmerke Kaczerginski, M. M. Shaffir, Zalman Shazar, and others. The children's section contains Botwinik's musical setting to poems of Elchanan Indelman, Mates Olitsky, Perl Halter, Simon Frug, Shmuel Tsesler, and others.
