Daniel Greenwood New CD Released

Daniel Greenwood released a CD with Galpaz six years ago called Mayim Ad Nofesh and got a review from The Jerusalem Post. He has recently released a new CD with CDBaby called Onah Hashem. It is available on ITunes .There are a number of full songs on MySpace

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble New CD Released

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble Interprets Festive Melodies from the Hebraic Songbook, the latest contemporary world music album was just released by Eugene Marlow¹s Heritage Ensemble.

The Heritage Ensemble is dedicated to the concert performance of liturgical and folksong Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian styles, with a touch of classicism for good measure.

Nine tracks: four from the Chanukah festival, two from Purim. An original composition, Yotvata--a mixture of classical and jazz--celebrates the creation of the leading dairy kibbutz in Israel. An eighth track, Halleluyah, from the liturgy, is a solo piano arrangement.

· A unique feature of Celebrations is a ninth track narrated by Dr. Marlow that describes The Heritage Ensemble¹s history, repertoire, and philosophy. Musical clips from the current album and a forthcoming CD (to be released in Spring 2011) underscore Marlow¹s comments.

· Personnel: multi-Grammy nominee drummer Bobby Sanabria, who also serves as album co-producer, along with Dr. Eugene Marlow, the Ensemble¹s founder, arranger, leader, and keyboardist. Other performers include Nuyorican percussionist Cristian Rivera, NEA performance grantee saxophonist Michael Hashim, and acoustic/electric bassist Frank Wagner.

Eugene Marlow, Ph.D. is a composer/arranger, producer, presenter, performer, author, journalist, and educator who has written over 200 classical and jazz compositions for solo instruments, jazz and classical chamber groups, and jazz big band. Under the MEII Enterprises label, he has produced six CDs of original compositions and arrangements.

Marlow is senior co-chair of the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives Concert Series at Baruch College (The City University of New York), now in its 19th season. In early 2010, Marlow received a Creative Connections grant from Meet the Composer for his work with The Heritage Ensemble.

Dr. Marlow is a former member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, and current member of the Jazz Journalists Association, the New York Composers Circle, and Chamber Music America. He is a voting member of The Recording Academy.

Yiddish Song Workshop at Felicja Blumental Music Centre Tel Aviv

The Yiddish Song Workshop‚ under the direction of Nekhama Lifshitz‚ is now admitting new singers. For details please contact Regina (0547621628) or Udi (0542026242). The workshop was founded 12 years ago by Nekhama Lifshitz‚ queen of Yiddish song. The aims of the workshop are to preserve Eastern European culture in general and Yiddish language and song in particular. Weekly workshop lessons are conducted privately by pianist and coach Regina Dricker‚ Nekhama’s right hand for many years. The lessons include voice training and study of Yiddish language and culture through the songs. Every year the workshop presents a number of song evenings or shows based upon different themes. Some of the performances‚ such as the evening dedicated to the Holocaust‚ are held throughout the country. This past year‚ which was dedicated to Yiddish poet Itsik Manger‚ we put on performances of ”The Megilah” [The Purimspiel] as well as a concert of Manger’s poetry and songs. The liturgy of the Syrian Jewish community synthesizes the Maqam music of their Arab neighbors with their own Hebrew poetry and prayers. Mark Kligman, PhD, Professor of Jewish Musicology, will trace the development of this music which he explores in his book Maqam and Liturgy: Ritual, Music and Aesthetics of Syrian Jews in Brooklyn. Isaac J. Cabasso, Cantor of Congregation Beth Torah, a Syrian synagogue in Brooklyn, NY, will lend his 50 years of experience in Syrian Hazzanut to the conversation, and perform excerpts of the prayers in various maqams. Musical accompaniment on the oud will be performed by Victor Esses, Cantor of Sephardic Synagogue, Brooklyn, NY. Joseph Mosseri, Cantor and founder of the Hazzanut Forum, will discuss the resurgence of Maqam music among the community's younger generation.
