Sway Machinery's Musical Extravaganza "Hidden Melodies Revealed: A Secret Celebration of Rosh Hashanah"

The Night Before Rosh Hashonah.....
September 17th at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple
"The Sway Machinery Makes The Ancient Modern And The Mythological Real"
- Village Voice

On the heels of their successful New York City events in 2007 and 2008, JDub Records Presents America's only indie rock/Jewish cantorial music group, The Sway Machinery www.swaymachinery.com
http://www.myspace.com/theswaymachinery
bringing one of the most unique celebrations of the Jewish new year "Hidden Melodies Revealed - a Secret Celebration of Rosh Hashanah" to Los Angeles for 2009. This multi-media concert event celebrates Rosh Hashanah in a presentation that is part ritual, part rock concert. The performance is scheduled for the night before Rosh Hashanah, on September 17. "Hidden Melodies Revealed" will also include storytelling and compelling animated films.

The event will take place at 9:00pm

at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple
3663 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles
and admission is free.
An Open Bar Reception including wines from Wente Vineyards, will be held in the courtyard of the temple prior to the concert at 8:00PM.

The Sway Machinery's unique musical vision re-contextualizes Ashkenazic Jewish spiritual music, the soulful vocal Cantorial style most often heard in American Jewish synagogues, into the broader spectrum of world music. The band finds inspiration for new versions of Cantorial classics in African popular music, Eastern European folk music and American blues. Their ever rotating line-up features an incredible roster of musicians for the Los Angeles event; led by blues guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, along with John Bollinger of Barbez on drums, noted tenor sax player Matt Bauder, Kelly Pratt of the Beirut and Arcade Fire horn sections (and his own acclaimed project Plan B) on trumpet, and touring member of The Arcade Fire and frequent Tom Waits collaborator Colin Stetson on bass saxophone. Other exciting musical guests are expected and will be announced as they are confirmed.

Hidden Melodies Revealed will also feature a screening of Guggenheim fellow Shawn Atkin's animated short film depicting the dawn of monotheism, The Akeidah.

Rabbi Steve Leder of Wilshire Boulevard Temple is pleased to welcome The Sway Machinery to this historic Temple campus noting, "Along with our ambitious renovation and expansion that symbolize the reversal of the Jewish exodus from the eastern part of Los Angeles, we are pleased to host events like Hidden Melodies Revealed to connect with and welcome the young, indie, Jewish and multicultural audiences from the hip eastside neighborhoods we are expanding to serve such as Hollywood, Hancock Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Echo Park."

The Sway Machinery's sound stems from Lockwood's rich musical relationships with his grandfather Cantor Jacob Konigsberg, and with his mentor, the renowned blues player Carolina Slim, who fondly guided Lockwood's musical development. Konigsberg, one of the last great exponents of Cantorial singing, led Lockwood into an understanding and love of the soulful and ancient heritage of Synagogue music. Lockwood's deeply personal relationship to these two musical traditions helped him to forge a unique musical language of his own, as he learned to move from singing in his grandfather's study to playing with Carolina Slim in New York City subway stations. The Sway Machinery was borne out of this dichotomy.

Though The Sway Machinery carefully cultivates Lockwood's deeply felt relationship to his musical roots, his accomplished colleagues bring to the table the sounds of afro-beat horns, unassailable rock beats and an astutely contemporary musical sensibility. Lockwood layers the haunting notes of his Cantorial-influenced vocals over the energetic, celebratory rhythms of afro-pop, hard-hitting drums and the blues. "Hidden Melodies Revealed" showcases pieces based on mystical texts taken directly from the Jewish High Holiday prayers and reconfigures them in a startlingly new musical landscape. Lockwood's ambitious melding of styles results in what The Village Voice has called a most "joyful synthesis."

Upto Here | From Here CD Release

Vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb releases third album Upto Here | From Here In stores in USA/Canada and digitally worldwide. This review came to the JMWC:
With her third full-length album, Israeli-born Ayelet Rose Gottlieb has elevated to a rarefied level of artistry. On the new album, Upto Here | From Here, released August 11 on Arogole Records imprint and distributed through ObliqSound, Gottlieb pulls the art of jazz singing out of its safety zone and infuses it with new possibilities, exploring the human voice in a way that few contemporary singers can or will. And Gottlieb does so seemingly nonchalantly, with the panache and authority of an artist who has been making records for decades, not a mere handful of years.

"Unlike so many singers around her, she explores the textures and styles that her voice can produce. She is an instrumentalist on par with any other and a fully integrated member of her band," notes Andrey Henkin, editor of All About Jazz, in the album's liner notes. Upto Here | From Here features a cast of musicians with whom Gottlieb has worked since 2002, some of the most skilled and visionary players the New York jazz scene has to offer:
Loren Stillman (saxophone),
fellow Israelis Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Anat Fort (piano),
Ed Schuller (bass)
and the late Take Toriyama (drums), who passed away in 2007.

Gottlieb's earlier recordings--the avant-garde-oriented debut InTernal ExTernal (Genevieve, 2004) and Mayim Rabim (Tzadik, 2006), an original song cycle based on the erotic biblical love poem "Song of Songs" and sung entirely in Hebrew--established Gottlieb as an adventurous, even audacious performer.

Upto Here | From Here, co-produced by Gottlieb and her husband Shahar Levavi, makes it even clearer that Gottlieb is a commanding artist who thrives on the unexpected: Her improvisational acumen is second to none, her confidence as a leader and her range defy description, and her artistic inquisitiveness spurs her to outdo herself each time out.

Yiddish Radio Winnipeg - Jacques Grober and His Music

Sunday August 9/09
Yiddish 2:00 to 2:30 PM CDT (3:00-3:30 PM EDT)
CKJS 810 Winnipeg online live streaming http://www.ckjs.com (click on 'Listen Live')

Rochelle Zucker decided to dedicate a radio show to the memory of the French Yiddish singer, composer and author Jacques Grober.

Grober was born in Paris in 1951 - the son of Holocaust Survivirs from Poland. From about 1980 until his death in 2006 - when he was just in his prime, Grober was vital and important force of the Yiddish music scene in France. He studied Yiidish singing with the Yiddish legend Sarah Gorby. The more he became involved with Yiddish, the language of his parents and grandparents, the more he realized how important it was to create contemporaty songs in Yiddish so that Yiddish could be continue being heard as a living language. Many of his compositions are very original and use modern themes and rhythms. Although Grober is no longer with us, his music and ideas live on.

After his death the Fondation Du Judaisme Francais issued a wonderful CD Jacques Grober - Yiddish Songs from Yesterday and Today. The "Parizer Yidish Tsenter - Medem Bibliotek" published a songbook collection of Grobers song's and compositions. It is called Chiriboim.

All of the songs featured on the show are performed by Grober and are on the CD except one. Most are original compositions. Also included is Helene's Nigun - which Helene Engel who was a collegue and dear friend of Grober, composed and dedicated to his memory.
