Klezmer workshop and concert in Leeds

Klezmer music and Yiddish dance workshop, led by Ilana Cravitz and Guy Schalom, with members of FDT Klezmorim and guests
10:00am Workshop for all and introduction to the afternoon’s concert performance

Participants and observers will learn about the historical background and cultural context of this Jewish music and the associated dances. They will then have the opportunity to gain hands-on (or feet-on!) experience, choosing either to study the music (style, ornamentation, accompaniment) in more depth, or to learn some of the dances with experienced dance leader and drummer Guy Schalom, with live music from members of the band. No previous knowledge of klezmer music or dance required. Instrumentalists should be grade 4 equivalent or above.

3:00pm Afternoon Concert: FDT Klezmorim - Bessarabia – London – Philadelphia: Klezmer from Old World to New, and back again

A journey beyond the borders of time and space with a programme of old and new ‘traditional’ Jewish music crossing the boundaries between Orient and Occident. Featuring Ilana Cravitz (fiddle), Susi Evans (clarinet), John Bone (accordion), Matt Bacon (bazouki/guitar), Guy Schalom (drums), Paul Tkachenko (bass).

Tickets: £12 adult (£8 concessions); £3 students and young people.
