KlezKanada 2007 Starts Tonight

KlezKanada, in Lanier, Quebec Canada is starting tonight, Monday August 20th. This is the 12th year of the annual camp program. This year, the all star faculty is amazing, the students are superb, and the excitement is palpable. If you're not here this year, make sure to mark this week on your calendar for next. Looks like the first newsletter, by Ari Davidow, greeted the attendees as they arrived. Each day of camp, there's a camp newsletter published in 3 languages which might be any combination of Yiddish, English, French, Spanish, German or Russian. You never know who will get around to writing an article and each are published in the native language. KlezKanada is a music camp for families or individuals. There's a tremendous amount of talent present and we're hearing it already. If the internet connectivity holds up, perhaps the JMWC will do more reports from here. Join dynamic Isaraeli artist Idan Raichel for his very first series of intimate acoustic concerts in New York. Idan blends the unique sounds of Israel's cultural tradition with styles frm around the world for a sound that Billboard Magazine calls a "multi-ethnic tour de force." Showcasing new and old musical partnerships, Idan and artists will celebrate the universal language of music.

Vladimir Feltsman
Virtuoso Pianist: Music from Poland and Russia
This fall, dynamic artist Vladimir Feltsman will perform music from Poland's keyboard master, Chopin, and one of Russia's most dramatic piano pieces: Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Feltman's celebrated version of the epic work has been called "electrifying" and the "best live performance" by top critics from The New York Times to the Seattle Times. Mr Feltsman will be interviewed in a post-concert conversation.

Misha and Cipa Dichter: Two- and Four-Hand Piano Masterworks

World-famous pianists Misha and cipa Dichter are back for another evening of superlative piano performances. The New York Times called their last sold-out appearance at the Museum-Babi Yar Remembered: Yuvtushenko and Shostakovich in Word and Song-"illuminating."

Equally at ease in the solo piano repetoire or playing together, the program will feature the Dichters performing music by two beloved Jewish-American icons, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, in Copland's El Salon Mexico, arranged by Bernstein. Misha Dichter will also be performing solo favorites by Brahms, Schumann, and Liszt. The Dichters will be interviewed in a post-concert conversation.

Hearing Israel: Music, Culture and History at 60

As the State of Israel approaches the sixtieth anniversary of its founding in the spring of 2008, academic scholarship continues to focus primarily on its political life, religious and ethnic diversity, and foreign policy. Much less attention has been devoted to the cultural life of Israeli society and its impact on evolving Israeli identities across generations. One of the most dynamic yet least studied spheres of Israeli culture to emerge in the six decades since statehood is its music, ranging from the worlds of pop music, rock, rap, and /musikah mizrahit /to classical, religious, and ethnic traditions.

To examine these questions, the University of Virginia will host an historic international conference on Israeli music on April 13 and 14, 2008.

This conference aims to generate an interdisciplinary exploration of Israeli music from the multiple perspectives of ethnomusicology, history, sociology, literature, and cultural studies, among others. We invite all specialists in Israeli, Arabic, and Jewish culture to submit proposals for papers on topics related to music in Israel, broadly defined. Both historical and contemporary perspectives are welcome.

Featured thematic rubrics for the conference include the role of music in national identity and nationalism among Israeli Jews and Palestinian citizens of Israel, the changing relationship between religion and secularism, popular culture and political ideology, and the evolution of /musikah mizrahit/ in Israeli society. Along with the academic component of the programming, the conference will also feature two concert performances by major Israeli artists.

Proposals for papers should include names of participants with a brief c.v. and a 250-350 word abstract. The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Virginia will provide meals and discounted lodging for conference participants.

Jewish Songs at an Exhibition

Yiddish singer Sharon Bernstein (voice & piano) and klezmer pioneer Stu Brotman (bass, tsimbl, & percussion) join forces in a unique performance set to paintings by self-taught Toronto artist Mayer Kirshenblatt . Kirshenblatt’s vibrant portraits of his home town Apt, Poland before the Holocaust inspire a rich blend of traditional song and contemporary sound . Projected images of the paintings connected with the songs complete this experience that recreates the sights and sounds of a Jewish Polish town.
