NEW YORK, NY - After last year's sold-out show which the Downtown Express called "authentic, funny - and yes, subversive...," the Museum welcomes a new line-up of the best local Jewish talent. JEWISH ORTHODOX RABBI DUO, MUSIC AND JOY, TO PERFORM LIVE IN SALE,
Music and Joy concert at The Waterside Arts Centre on Sunday 17 June 2007 Music and Joy http://www.artboo.com/musicandjoy/music , the Jewish duo comprising Rabbi Danny Bergson and Rabbi Mitch Goodman, is performing at The Waterside Arts Centre, Sale, Manchester, UK on June 17th. This is the third concert by the two orthodox Rabbis, who have already had such an effect on the Jewish music world. Music and Joy plays a sophisticated mix of rock, jazz, fusion, world and Jewish sounds.Music and Joy's concert starts at 19.30 at The Waterside Arts Centre, Sale, Manchester, M33 7ZF, on Sunday June 17th 2007. Tickets are available from the box office, 0161 912 5616, priced at £12.50 for adults, and £8 for under 12s, students, and senior citizens.
Rabbi Danny Bergson is a professional singer and performs regularly at weddings, seminars, and musical evenings across the UK. He studied singing with Danny Hendrickson, the main tenor of the Jerusalem Choir in the Great Synagogue, before undertaking his classical training with the Royal Northern College of Music.
Rabbi Mitchell Goodman, who plays both electric and acoustic guitar, has been a professional musician for 15 years. He is an experienced session musician, guitar tutor and technician. Rabbi Mitch studied with Dave Kilminster, who now plays with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. He is well known in the Jewish music industry in Israel, where he was based for many years.
The pair met through their work in the Manchester community. Rabbi Mitch is director of the Hale Trust, which runs educational and social events. Rabbi Danny directs 'Ignite the Soul', which organises events for young adults in Greater Manchester.
Music and Joy's original arrangements are both soulful and spiritual. As educators, the two have drawn on their experience to infuse their music with meaning. They take metaphysical concepts and present them in a structured aural framework, complemented visually by a light show.
Music and Joy's first event was a concert in a private home in front of 60 people. Its second concert, which was held in Hale Synagogue, attracted an audience of more than 200. They have become part of the wave of new musicians who are invigorating the Jewish music scene. After the concert on 17th June 2007, Music and Joy plan to record their debut album. Rabbi Mitch comments: "It is no coincidence we've been brought together. We use our music to communicate our deep felt emotion, and to bring joy to people of all backgrounds."
Jonathan Steinberg, Music and Joy's event organiser says: "These guys are breaking down the perceptions people have of Jewish music. You might come along expecting to hear two Rabbis playing guitar together, but instead you'll see two highly accomplished professional musicians. Music and Joy is bringing Jewish music to a new, wider audience and has to be heard."

proud of its international reputation as one of the world s finest
mixed voice Jewish choirs. Our wide ranging repertoire embraces all
the traditional Jewish cultures, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Yiddish and

and overseas, and besides singing well known favourites, are
particularly proud to present new music, often specially
commissioned, from contemporary composers.

Canterbury Cathedral.
Over the years the Zemel Choir have made many recordings, the most
recent of which The English Tradition of Jewish Choral Music
conducted by Robert Max with Cantor Moshe Haschel was described as a
fascinating and beautifully performed selection of synagogue music
from the 19th and 20th centuries .
The Zemel Choir have recently completed a European Tour and have in
the past performed in the U.S.A., Canada, Israel, and Eastern and
Western Europe, and in 1993 participated in the Polish Holocaust
Memorial ceremonies in Warsaw and Treblinka to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. At the 1996 Zimriyah
Choral Festival in Jerusalem the Choir was invited to sing at the
opening ceremony concert which was broadcast live on Israel Radio.
Plans for the near future include 3 concerts in London before the end
of 2006 and beyond that a possible tour of Western Europe in the
spring of 2007.

Vampire Suit reunites in Brooklyn June 22nd
After a long break spent pursuing other activities, the members of Vampire
Suit reunite at their favorite venue. The band will play on June 22nd at Barbes, 376
9th St., Park Slope, Brooklyn, at 8pm.
As the group's leader and composer, Jay Vilnai brings to Vampire Suit his wide
palette experiences as a musician in New York, having shared the stage with such
diverse figures as Klezmer great Frank London, Brazilian percussionist Jorge Martins
and
saxophonist Roy Nathanson, and having played anything from traditional jazz to
Balkan music, Klezmer to Schoenberg, free improv to cabaret shows.
The music has enduring beauty that touches on the heart of the Middle East's
musical culture while exhibiting western flair. Open improvisations and the spirit
of the belly dance coexist, encouraging the traditional undulated hip movements as
a supplement to the solid instrumentation....
-Frank Rubolino, Cadence Magazine
Also in play is Vilnai's unique musical heritage as a Russian-Romanian-Polish
descendant raised in Jerusalem around a mix of contemporary and traditional Jewish
and Arab music, with a soul for rock n'roll and a BFA in jazz. Couple that with a
passion for Bartok and Stravinsky and you end up with all original music that draws
on all those influences to create something akin to traditional music for a
generation that hails from so many traditions. Balkan and Middle-Eastern rhythms are
prominent, backed by 20th century composing concepts and jazz improvising.
'Vilnai and his vampires get high marks for their utter unpredictability from track
to track, their sheer joy they get from and give to the music and the various
textures and sounds that emerge.'
- Budd Kopman, All About Jazz
The result is a highly personal musical texture that takes you from the tribal
dances of North Africa to the marshes of the Balkans. A musical journey that is at
once personal and global, music that is at the same time unmistakably modern, yet
feels old and familiar.
'If Bram Stoker's imaginary Transylvania had a jazz scene, the music might sound
something like this.'
-Jazz Review
To help create that sound Vampire Suit draws on the talents of young New York
musicians that have had experience in different musical settings and cultures.
Collaborators Skye Steele (violin), Gary Pickard (sax), Mike Savino (bass) and Rich
Stein (percussion) are all adept at a variety of traditions, and well-traveled in
the jazz, rock and world scenes in New York and around the globe. They each bring
their sensibility to Vampire Suit's far-reaching music, while the compositions are
constructed to showcase their talents and abilities.
DYB tells the story their way
This might not be the way some musicologists might tell the story, but those invested in this topic should read it.Here's the pitch and how they tell it::
" What do Matisyahu, Blue Fringe, Klezmatics, Moshav Band, and Soul Farm all have in common?
Their direct connection to The Diaspora Yeshiva Band, the band that invented Jewish Rock!
The Diaspora Yeshiva Band¹s recordings signify, perhaps, the most influential change in modern Jewish music history. Here is an exclusive, fascinating and informative article about a history-making group, and the major fore-runners of today¹s Jewish music by one of the original founding members.
