"Days of Awe" at Rodeph Sholom, Manhattan

The "Days of Awe" to be Experienced during Selichot at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, Manhattan

The music of the High Holy Days will be explored in a sacred experience by David Chevan with the Afro-Semitic Experience in a program of instrumental interpretations called "The Days of Awe." Cantor Rebecca Garfein, Senior Cantor of Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan will join Chevan and the Afro-Semitic Experience and with them enter a unique spiritual realm with their arrangements of original music, High Holy Day cantorial works from the repertoire of Hazzan Yosele Rosenblatt, along with familiar traditional Jewish congregational High Holiday melodies on Selichot at 7:30p.m., September 16, 2006. Special Guest, Frank London of the Klezmatics will join as well for this special evening. The program, a highly meditative series of improvisations and interpretations of traditional melodies, is geared to all ages.

Cantor Rebecca Garfein is the Senior Cantor of Congregation Rodeph Sholom and is the first female Cantor to hold this position in the history of the congregation. Cantor Garfein has appeared in numerous recitals throughout the United States, Israel, and Europe and has two solo CD recordings, a live recording from the 1997 Jewish Festival in Berlin entitled, "Sacred Chants of the Contemporary Synagogue" and her first studio recording, "Golden Chants in America...Commemorating 350 years of Jewish Music, 1654-2004," the first U.S. recording to feature Jewish music spanning 350 years of life in America.
Cantor Garfein graduated cum laude from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music with a degree in vocal performance and opera. In 1993, she received her Master's Degree in Sacred Music and Cantorial Investiture from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR).

David Chevan was musically active from an early age. He grew up in a Conservative-Egalitarian Jewish synagogue where he led services from the age of 10. Although much of his performing method on the double-bass has been self taught, Chevan credits the master bassist, Lisle Atkinson with showing Chevan the pathway to self-education. As a composer Chevan has primarily focused on works for improvisers. He has written works for a wide range of artists and ensembles, including several collaborations with dance and film. In addition to performing regularly in a duo with pianist Warren Byrd and leading their group, The Afro-Semitic Experience, Chevan has had the opportunity to perform and record with a wide range of creative musical artists, including Ali Ryerson, Joe Beck, Jaki Byard, Harold Danko, Ellery Eskelin, Giacomo Gates, Frank London, Andrea Parkins, and Cookie Segelstein. He is an Associate Professor of Music at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven and holds a Ph.D in Music History from C.U.N.Y.

For the past decade, the Afro-Semitic Experience has been actively exploring ways to express and share sacred music in a jazz setting. Whether in the context of a concert or service in a synagogue or church, almost all of the music we share comes from the sacred traditions of our peoples. Imagine a band that understands and can present interpretations of music from traditions as rich as gospel, klezmer, nigunim, spirituals, and swing and you have the Afro-Semitic Experience.

"The Days of Awe" album was featured on National Public Radio in 2005 and was chosen as the number three album in the Jewish Week's Top Ten List of Best Jewish Recordings in 2003.

Daniel Kahn at Pete's in Brooklyn

Daniel Kahn, will be playing at Pete's Candy Store this Monday (Labor Day). That's September 4, 9:00 pm, at 709 Lorimer Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - 11211 (718) 302 - 3770.
for more information:
http://www.danielkahn.com
http://www.petescandystore.com

Jeanette Lewicki writes: If you haven't yet heard of Daniel Kahn's band, The Painted Bird, don't worry -- you will. They are currently based in Berlin, so Dan has recruited local talent to support him as he migrates through Brooklyn. He will be playing his own & other people's songs on accordion, piano, cigar box ukelele, & G-d only knows what else, backed up (into a corner) by Michael Winograd (clarinet), Nick Cudahy (bass), Jeanette Lewicki (accordion, vocals) & possibly other special guests too notorious for us to mention in public. Let's just say, get there on time if you want to sit down.

Daniel is a wonderful poet & songwriter who has chosen to work in Yiddish, & to translate Yiddish songs into English. Michael Winograd is another highly combustible composer of new Yiddish music. It's been an honour getting to know them & the other young modernists who are making a big splash in the Yiddish song pool. Now I have to go get some rest.

International Federation of Choral Music in Jerusalem

International Federation for Choral Music Conference
September 16-20, 2006
Jerusalem, Israel

Sponsors:
Hallel, the Israel Choral Organization is hosting. also:
Israel Ministry of Education and Culture
Israel Music Department of the Cultural Directorate
Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Jerusalem Music Center
Mishkenot Sha'ananim Conference Center

A very exciting and interesting event is taking place in Israel before the High Holidays. If any of you are not totally immersed in preparations for the High Holidays and/or will be visiting relatives in Israel for the holidays, the letter below about the program may be of extreme interest to you. The letter is written by Professor André de Quadros who is the head of the Music Department at Boston University and the chair of the Multicultural and Ethnic division of the International Federation of Choral Music. Below is his letter:

"On behalf of the Ethnic and Multicultural Commission, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate in, or present at, the Voices of Jerusalem Conference of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM). In a world that develops nuclear weapons, deals with increasing terrorism, and abuses its environment, choral singing is one of the most powerful unifying forces. Differences in culture, political ideology, race and language fade when people of all backgrounds become one voice that creates a global family.
IFCM holds a mission of facilitating international communication through choral music, particularly in bitterly divided parts of the world.
The conference will be held in Jerusalem, Israel on 16-20 September, 2006 and will be a veritable feast of workshops, concerts and lecture demonstrations focusing on Jerusalem as a center for three great Abrahamic religions, traditions and cultures: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
If you have any questions about the conference, please contact me at (617) 353-8789 or adq@bu.edu.
Yours faithfully
Professor André de Quadros
Chair, Multicultural and Ethnic Commission of IFCM
" For information on applying to participate or present, contact Maya Shavit at maya@efroni.org About the International Federation for Choral Music
IFCM was founded in 1982 for the purpose of facilitating communication and exchange between choral musicians throughout the world. IFCM holds a mission of facilitating international communication through choral music, particularly in bitterly divided parts of the world.
IFCM is fulfilling its purpose through its world and regional symposia, conducting master classes, World Youth Choir, Choral Music Database (Musica), ChoralNet website, World Choral Census, International Choral Bulletin, World Day of Choral Singing and many other projects.

IFCM is the official representative of choral music on the International Music Council of the UNESCO. The Council recognizes that there are perhaps more people in the world participating in choral music than in any other group activity and that choral musicians need an organization such as IFCM to encourage and facilitate international communication and cooperation.

Herman Berlinski: From the World of My Father [8.559446]

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music has released a CD of four works for the synagogue and the concert hall by German-born, American composer and organist Herman Berlinski. These works reflect his rich, post-Romantic musical language, eclectic musical style, and depth of Jewish inspiration. This new disc complements the Milken Archive's 2004 release of the composer's Avodat Shabbat, a large-scale setting of the Sabbath evening liturgy according to the American Reform prayerbook. It brings to 45 the number of recordings released since the Milken Archive CD series was launched in September 2003.

KlezKanada has Started, So I'm on Vacation

9:15pm JMWC KlezKanada Blog here. Departing from the usual announcements, JMWC is creating a week of blogging from the wonderful and beautiful setting of KlezKanada, where I'm on vacation this week. Amazingly, they have internet connection this year, so I thought those who wish could can read what I'm doing on my summer vacation for a change.

Lucky me, my husaband and I are here at KlezKanada, --Leaving Boston...traveling through New Hampshire, Vermont and the Canadian border... where it was a relief that the holdup was not too long... on through the Montreal traffic, through the Laurentians and here at Camp B'nai B'rith. KlezKanada is getting an early start this evening with a cabaret starting right off the bat --candlelit checkered tablecloths, the whole thing--with some young singers... , "Papiroisson" is being sung with Michael Winograd accompanying Rena Herman, --who has a nice voice is setting a great mood for the crowd. Now it's a Yiddish sing-along. More performers from Toronto Mike Liebowitz on sax and the Crazy Klermer Machine. Cool, modern mixed with klezmer. The rain is keeping everyone inside, so it's really crowded. It's camp, so everyone is greeting old friends and familiar with every bump in the roads around the campsite. Variety show time. "Rumania, Rumania" and the night begins to get a bit more with it. A clarinet medley...That's the first 30 minutes. I guess it's going to be a great week of fun and lots of great Yiddish music. These Yiddish camps (there's also KlezKamp in the States, and Yiddishvokh) are about as close as you get to Yiddishland nowadays come alive with music, art, dance, crafts, literature, theater and plenty for the family to do. Now I'm hearing "Die Mame Iz Gegangen" with clarinet and banjo...

So I'm sitting here with Carolyn Shaffer from Montreal and she plays accordian. It's her fourth time her at KlezKanada... she's absolutely loves it, Carolyn tells me: "it's huge thing in my life, it's so inspiring, I've learned so much. Four years ago I was a beginner and I learned a lot and it's my entry into the music. Now I'm in a girl Yiddish band called the "Yiddenes". We got our name her at KlezKanada. Someone told us this word, "yiddene", which means Jewess, and we loved it so we adopted the name for our band. It has a kind of connotation of someone bossy, but we're reclaiming the word as something positive... It's really something special to play in an all female Klezmerband."

Another band is playing German Goldenshteyn's songs...

You can find out more about the camp and the activities here at www.klezkanada.com.

WorldCat.org Now Available

OCLC, the central catalog organization of most major college, university and public libraries, announces the release of the new WorldCat.org Web site.

This site---and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to your Web site---opens the complete WorldCat database to the public, not just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of OCLC’s Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users can now search the entire WorldCat database with the method most familiar to them: simple keywords. As in Open WorldCat, each linked result leads to a "Find in a Library" information page. From there, users can enter geographic information such as a zip or postal code, receive a list of nearby libraries that own the item, and link right to a library's online catalog record to initiate circulation activity or access electronic content directly. Users can also create their own WorldCat account and add book reviews, table-of-contents information and notes to many WorldCat items, helping to personalize their library search experience.

From WorldCat.org, any Web user or organization can also easily download and install the free, WorldCat search box to their personal or commercial Web page, allowing even more people to discover library content through WorldCat. Libraries and other groups inside and outside the OCLC cooperative are encouraged to add the box to their sites. ... the ability to search for library materials to as many other sites as possible will help increase the awareness of libraries as primary sources of reliable information and helpful personal assistance.

In terms of music searching, the WorldCat catalog includes books, names of journals, 78s, LPs, CDs, DVDs, sheet music, scores and musical anthologies that are held by many libraries in the US, Canada, Europe and other places. To try the new WorldCat search box and download the box to your own Web site, visit the site at http://worldcat.org.

Hadassah Helps Everyone

Editorial: It's a rare day that the Jewish Music WebCenter veers off the topic of music, but given the events in Israel this past month, there is the urgent need. Hadassah is an organization dedicated to healing. They treat all people who come to them. There are so many injured people from this terrible war. They need our help... so I'm linking to Hadassah's national donation page. If you can help, take a web visit and make a generous donation. Since 1997, The Jewish Music WebCenter has operated without asking for any money-- but today we do -- and hope you can give to those who will really benefit. Thanks so much, Judy Pinnolis, JMWC Editor. https://www.kintera.org/site/apps/ka/sd/donorcustom.asp?c=9fLKJSOuHpE&b=2003235&kntaw5855=BC31E071AFA94033AA26682C2525778D

New Shabbos Waltz by David Grisman and Andy Statman

A new CD by instrumentalists David Grisman and Andy Statman called ' New Shabbos Waltz ' is now available. Years ago Grisman and Statman were highly successful with their first CD, "Songs of Our Fathers." This is the first release they've done together since then of a CD of Jewish Music. FROM THE BOOKLET: "Although this is an instrumental album, the majority of the original songs alternate between the twin themes of shabbos and Jerusalem, which are closely related. Jewish mystics state that what Shabbos is in time, Jerusalem is in space." Selections include; Avinu Malkeinu, Anim Zemiros, Pischu Li, Shabbos Ha Yom La Shem, Ya'Aleh, Old Klezmer, Yerushalyim Shel Zahav, Ani Ma'amin, Lekha Dodi, and more. CD available through many vendors, including Hatikvah Music, Contact: (323) 655-7083.
