New Faces Old Souls and more CDs Released

Leah Epstein is a song writer living in Israel since making Aliya from Chicago in 1981. She lives on Moshav Keshet, an orthodox community in the Golan. Her Hebrew and English songs are wistful, and at the same time religious and personal. The music itself is heavily influenced from a 'time capsule' of American song from some 30 years ago, such as American folk, Carole King or Joni Mitchell. There are some highly personal songs, such as "Child of the Heights" dedicated to her son killed in a car accident, and other of her texts are more universally and politically themed. The CDs, Nof Mushlam (A Perfect View), and New Faces, Old Souls, are available at Moria Books and Music in the Old City and through cdbaby.com. Leah can be reached by email at leah_epstein@walla.com. While Mrs. Epstein is an amateur musician and singer, her songs, intended for women only, will have meaning for encapsulating her experiences, her attitudes, and this period and of her life and times.

HaZamir Celebrates Landmark Concert

The Hazamir JHSC sends this newstory about a landmark concert held May 21 in New York City:
HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir, broke new ground as it celebrated its bar mitzvah with a Weekend Festival and Concert May 19-21st. Founder and Director Matthew Lazar welcomed nearly 1,000 audience members in a concert that reached a new height for the HaZamir movement. More than 200 singers from choirs across the globe came together in a unique blend of Shabbat, singing, and synergy for an unparalleled weekend.

The Gala Concert at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall featured two world premieres especially commisioned for HaZamir by composers Nick Page and Meir Finkelstein.

The concert also saw HaZamir alumni from the past 13 years of the program conducted by Cantor Charles Osborne. They emerged from the hall's wings in false grey beards and wigs to emphasize age, providing a comical moment for the attendees. HaZamir choirs from Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Montreal, New Brunswick NJ, Northern NJ, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Providence and Israel came together for a Shabbaton, comraderie, rehearsal and final concert.

Twenty-nine years later, "The Natural Gathering" still possesses a seemingly bottomless reservoir of uncompromising energy and creativity.

Shalshelet Second International Music Festival

Winning Composers Spanning the Globe Featured At Shalshelet s Second International Music Festival

CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND -- Shalshelet: The Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music, announced the names of the 28 composers whose 36 compositions will be presented during the Second International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music on Sunday, June 11 at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, Maryland (8300 Meadowbrook Lane). The 7 p.m. concert will feature 15 of these liturgical works, and the day-long Festival, beginning at 10 a.m., will showcase the remainder of the compositions.

Tickets: In advance concert only: $20; workshops & brunch: $30; concert and workshops & brunch: $40. Purchase tickets: send a check payable to Shalshelet, PO Box 15836, Chevy Chase, MD 20825 or www.shalshelet.org. At the door additional $5 for each event.

Building on the success of the inaugural Festival in November 2004, this year s submissions totaled more than 300 from 107 composers across the U.S., as well as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Israel and Uganda. The winning composers comprise a diverse group geographically and musically, and in their Jewish affiliations and practices -- Rabbis and Cantors, teachers and students, and those with primary occupations outside the Jewish and music worlds. The compositions include tunes for congregational singing, cantorial solos, and choral pieces in styles ranging from Hasidic to jazz, classical, South American and American pop.

I am in awe, overwhelmed with delight, said Hazzan Dr. Ramón Tasat, Shalshelet s president. That the numbers have doubled this year twice as many submissions by twice as many composers this is nothing short of amazing. It is a testament to the contribution Shalshelet continues to make as an essential outlet for liturgical music, he added.

Shalshelet encourages submissions (using a blind review process) from amateur and professional musicians. The music review committee consists of three highly accomplished musicians -- Hazzan Dr. Ramón Tasat, Hazzan Natasha J. Hirschhorn and Dr. Norma Brooks. (committee members bios attached)

The Festival is designed to provide an opportunity for the audience to hear traditional Jewish texts in fresh musical settings, and to learn from the composers. This year s program includes a Sunday evening concert and Sunday morning workshops with composers, focusing on four liturgical themes: Shabbat, Psalms (Tehillim), Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim) and Unusual Texts. The Sunday morning presentations and brunch allow for lively discussions of the creative process and musical approaches to text.

Shalshelet (Hebrew for chain ) was established as a non-profit in 2003 to encourage the creation of original Jewish liturgical music. The Foundation s mission is to build bridges within the Jewish community and beyond, by exposing a wider audience to Jewish religious music in creative ways.

Jewish Cinema in Geneva

Ciné - Concert exceptionnel !
Le "Sound & Light Cinematic Duo":
Merlin SHEPHERD: clarinettes & Polina SHEPHERD: piano

TIME: 11:00am 6:00 pm

RAIN LOCATION: Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton, Skokie

The 2006 Greater Chicago Jewish Festival, the heart and soul of Jewish Chicago, will be held on Sunday, June 11, at the Forest Preserve at Oakton (8000 N) and Lehigh (6300 W) in Morton Grove, from 11am-6pm. The multi-talented singer, songwriter Lisa Loeb will headline as part of continuous music and dance throughout the day.

Unique in its celebration of Jewish culture in America, the festival seeks to combine all aspects of the Chicagoland Jewish community. Four stages of music and dance create a vibrant background for over 40,000 attendees, who also can wander through the extensive art bazaar featuring artists from the U.S. and Israel.

Several acts are new to the festival this year. In addition to Lisa Loeb, the Jewish rock band, Blue Fringe, will perform, and the Urban Tunells Klezmerband is coming all the way from Norway for their first American appearance. Past Festival favorites such as Debbie Friedman, Stuart Rosenberg, Jeff Klepper and Rabbi Joe Black are returning to entertain their fans.

Representing the backbone of the Jewish community will be over 80 booths of co-sponsoring Jewish organizations reflecting the community's interests and diversity. Nearby visitors can browse in the Book Shuk, where visiting authors will sign their latest works.

With their parents in tow, children will revel at the Hands-On tent and the kids stage.

Everyone will enjoy the strictly kosher food court, which features several cooking demonstrations in addition to falafel, pizza, ice cream and more.

The Festival has something for everyone--teens, adults, children and seniors; families, singles and groups of friends; cultural, religious or secular Jews; those interested in any part of Jewish life. "The Festival provides an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate Jewish culture rather than the crises which punctuate our lives," commented Michael Lorge, the Festival's founder and executive director.

The all-day Festival, the largest Jewish cultural event in Chicago, is produced by the Jewish POCET, an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to creating quality events for the Chicago Jewish community. Free parking next to the Festival grounds.

For more information or to volunteer for the Festival please call 847-933-3000 or visit at www.jewishfestival.org

Lazar Weiner's Yiddish Art Songs Come to Life on New CD Release

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music has released another CD. This one is "The Art of Yiddish Song" with 32 songs by Lazare Weiner. [8.559443]. You can read a complete discription released by the Milken Archive about the recording. http://www.milkenarchive.org/articles/articles.taf?function=detail&id=112
Often referred to as "America's Jewish Schubert", Weiner's exquisite songs are a pinnacle of Yiddish art song (lider). This recording shows his mastery of craftsmanship, connection to the language, and complete immersion in the depths of meaning in Jewish culture. The performers are top drawer, and so the recording is a "must" for anyone interested in Yiddish art music, or generally in good lieder.

Max Stern's Messer Marco Polo at New York City Opera VOX Showcase

VOX: Showcasing American Composers 2006
Produced by New York City Opera
Presented by the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York University
566 LaGuardia Place (Washington Square Park South)
May 6 – 7, 2006
FREE
Sunday, MAY 7, 4:30 – 5:30 pm
Stephen Andrew Taylor, Paradises Lost, libretto by Kate Gale
Max Stern, Messer Marco Polo

Directions to Skirball Center:
The Skirball Center is located at 566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square Park South, within a few blocks of most subway lines, including West 4th St. (A, C, E, F, V, and S), 8th Street (N, R, W), Astor Place (6) and Christopher Street (1).

Many opera composers only get to hear their works through their computer speakers. But since 1999, New York City Opera has offered American composers the opportunity to hear their compositions with a full orchestra and superb young singers. VOX is the only program of its kind in the country, and it has offered audiences the first chance to hear works by composers such as Mark Adamo, Charles Wuorinen, Richard Danielpour, and Michael John LaChiusa that have gone on to define an American musical voice.

This May, City Opera brings the VOX Showcase downtown to New York University's Skirball Center, an intimate new theater devoted to developing young audiences for live performances. The City Opera Orchestra will play excerpts from twelve innovative new works by both established and emerging composers.

Discussions with the composers and other exciting events will make up a festival that is free and open to the public.
