Meira Warshauer’s “Like Streams in the Desert” to Be Performed By Los

Meira Warshauer’s “Like Streams in the Desert” will be performed by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony on Sunday, August 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, California. Meira also named 2006 Artist Fellow by South Carolina Arts Commission. The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony, led by its Artistic Director Noreen Green, will perform Warshauer's “Like Streams in the Desert” a piece written in 1998 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the state of Israel. This concert will showcase music that has its roots in Eastern Europe (Klezmer Yiddish), Russia, and Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Morocco, and Yemen. Other concert features will be Russian singer Svetlana Portnyansky, Barry Gold, the LAJS's principal cellist and member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Milken Archive of American Jewish Music artist Cantor Meir Finkelstein.
Meira Warshauer was also recently named a South Carolina Arts Commission 2006 Artist Fellow. As one of the five new Fellows selected by the Arts Commission, Warshauer, who was also named an Artist Fellow in music composition in 1994, is receiving a $2,000 award and an honor earned by few South Carolina artists. "We are honored to organize a program that recognizes South Carolina artists for their superior artistic abilities and helps advance their artistic careers," said Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette M. Surkamer. A graduate of Harvard, New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of South Carolina, Dr. Warshauer studied composition with Mario Davidovsky, Jacob Druckman, William Thomas McKinley, and Gordon Goodwin. She has received numerous awards from ASCAP as well as the America Music Center, Meet the Composer, and the South Carolina Arts Commission. In 2000, she received the first Art and Cultural Achievement Award from the Jewish Historical Society of S. Carolina. Ms. Warshauer is an Associate Music Faculty member at Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina . Her CDs include the soundtrack to the documentary “Land of Promise: The Jews of South Carolina” and "Spirals of Light", chamber music and poetry (by Ani Tuzman) on themes of enlightenment, on the Kol Meira label and "Revelation" for orchestra, included on the MMC CD “Robert Black Conducts”.
