Golem--Homesick Songs

Homesick Songs. New album features songs about old-world cities, towns and countries. It features gypsy songs sung by Annette Ezekiel.... but this is music for the younger generation, being edgy, sexy and very vibrant. The Washington Post said "GOLEM produces the sort of music you'd expect if the shtetl were filled with punks instead of peasants."... That gives the idea pretty well... it's Jewish, it's cool, but even though it's about Europe, probably not for your bubbe. A look at the website will tell more info about music stores where the CDs are being carried. http://www.golemrocks.com

UPCOMING SHOW DETAILS

Hannukah Photos with Golem are here: http://arielpublicity.com/golem/ Two of NYC favorites are coming together for one fabulous show in Beantown. The curse is reversed and time for us New Yawkers get over it and what better place to do it but in the heart of it all. Come get your dreidal on with the sexiest yids around.

"Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad? is a refreshing mix of comedy, music, spoken-word and show-stopping burlesque, told by the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat-Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah. These badass chosen chicks boldldare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt in a fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza, complete with kick lines, pasties and a rendition of "L'chaim" with a fist in the mouth. This ain't yo' mama's "Fiddler".

It ain't your grandma's either. Young, hip widely acclaimed New York-based Klezmer/Rock band GOLEM (named after the legendary Jewish Frankenstein of Prague) transforms the music of its Jewish grandparents, making it modern, edgy, sexy and brash. GOLEM has infused the World Music scene with a breath of fresh air from Eastern Europe. Their explosive onstage attitude gets Klezmer to rock. Fronted by Annette Ezekiel - bandleader, accordionist and singer - as well as madcap vocalist Aaron Diskin and violin virtuoso Alicia Jo Rabins, the band's six members create GOLEM's powerfully vibrant sound.

"Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad" began last year at a sold out event at NYC's Joe's Pub celebrating Heeb Magazine's 3rd issue release. Hosted by comedian/chanteuse The Goddess Perlman and featuring the very best of J-girl talent around, this show has been wowing sold-out crowds in NYC, Philadelphia, DC, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Madison, Detroit, Montreal, Burlington, Provincetown, the Berkshires, the Hamptons and of course the Catskills.

Golem has been working it too. They just released their new CD, "Homesick Songs," just in time for Chanukah. "Homesick Songs" is a Jewish party in a box. Including updated versions of Yiddish chestnuts and lesser known tunes, all love songs to the towns of Eastern Europe, "Homesick Songs will wake the golem itself. From Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park to the rock clubs of the Lower East Side, Golem seduces audiences of Klezmer fans and rockers alike.

This is a very special and unique show, even if you are not Jewish, you'll have a great time watching those crazy yids work it. It's almost like being be a M.O.T* for the night without the guilt, nagging mother and 10 hour seders. What better way to spend Chanukah than rockin' your roots with Golem and Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad??

Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo Celebrated 90th Birthday

(From Joods.nl, by Raya Lishansky, Translated by Irma Lopes Cardozo & Barry Mehler) http://www.joods.nl/archive/cultureel/muziek/JoodsNewsItem.2004-10-26.9494736971

With the Uilenburger Synagogue [in Amsterdam, Netherlands] bursting at the seams, Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo celebrated his 90th Birthday in concert with Santo Servicio, the choir of the Esnoga. The 17 man strong Santo Servicio[1] opened the concert with Baruch Habba, under the driven leadership of their director-singer Barry Mehler resurrecting it like a Phoenix after 63 years of silence. ... Read about it....

Prior to the official opening of the concert, Hazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo received congratulations and best wishes from many members of the audience. Under the melody of Baruch Habba, Hazzan Cardozo walked from the back of the Shul and joined the choir in full force. This was one of the many impressive moments of the evening. Lopes Cardozo sang in this choir from 1922 until 1939; first as a boy soprano and later on as a young adult until he received an appointment as cantor in Suriname in 1939.

Lopes Cardozo embodies the living memory of the musical culture of the pre-war Portuguese Jewish community. Throughout the evening he drew from his rich memory of fragments of synagogue music sometimes ushered with amusement from the audience, as he would say: “I know it by heart!” People in the hall softly hummed some of the well-known melodies.

In a conversation with Barry Mehler, Lopes Cardozo tells about Santo Servicio from before the war, a choir of volunteers, consisting of about 25 men and about 20 boys. Even famous singers like tenor Giacomo Aletrino were members of the choir. It was a touching moment when Hazzan Lopes Cardozo produced a small black leather-bound book. “In this book you can find the complete Seder Hazzanut of the Esnoga.” I copied the 140 pages from the original Seder Hazzanut when I went to the synagogue everyday with my father. This is a guide for the Hazzan for all services during the Jewish year; a kind of users-manual. You can find everything in it and I have added all the melodies of our tradition, so that I would not forget them. I knew that there was only a small chance that I would be able to get a job as Hazzan in Amsterdam. This little book traveled with me over the whole world, and now I am returning it home. Hazzan Lopes Cardozo presented this little book to Bram Palache, Parnas-member of the P.I.G. and one of the singers in the new Santo Servicio.

The evening’s program was musically filled with Santo Servicio and a male quartet. The traditional settings of Hallìl for the 1st and 2nd day Passover were again and again sung with a clear and strong voice by the Hazzan. The vocal highpoint of the evening was when the four soloists sang, "Mizmor l'David" a composition by Victor Schlesinger. This music had not been heard in Amsterdam for more than 60 years and was now made possible thanks to the cooperation of composer’s granddaughter Anna Schlesinger, who personally attended the concert.

The concert came to a close with a composition of L.A. Benavente, Shir Hamagnalot l'David Samachti. Afterwards there was a reception where the large audience was given the opportunity to raise a (non-alcoholic) glass to the health of Abraham Lopes Cardozo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] It was assumed for a long period of time that the sheet music of the vocal cultural heritage of the Amsterdam Portuguese liturgy as it was sung by Santo Servicio before the war and was lost. A few years ago, boxes with scores from the unique music from the Esnoga were discovered. A part of the scores has been inventoried, catalogued and ready to be (re-) used for services in the Esnoga. Santo Servicio was re-established in 2002 and has already sung multiple times during services in the Esnoga under the direction of Barry J. Mehler. The choir took part in the great "Three Cantors" concert that took place in 2003 in the Esnoga.

B'nai B'rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music Radio Station

Washington, D.C. --B'nai B'rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music radio station located in the United States began broadcasting on the Internet Oct. 18, 2004.
B'nai B'rith Radio, sponsored by B'nai B'rith International (BBI), plays Jewish music from all over the world through its website, www.bnaibrithradio.org.

Unlike most Internet radio, it is free both of charge and commercials. The station is fully subsidized by BBI and its members and supporters.

Along with an eclectic Judaic play list-which includes traditional Yiddish, secular Israeli, Jewish American, Instrumental, and Chasidic music -there will be special programming like Saturday night sing-a-longs, a remembrance program for slain former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, and festive holiday shows during the Chanukah and Sukkot seasons.

"The goal is to unite the Jewish community throughout the world with music," said Joel S. Kaplan, president of BBI. B'nai B'rith Radio is a natural extension of BBI's history of reaching out and uniting Jewish communities. "Unfortunately, Jews are accustomed to coming together during tragedy, and to focus on the negative events in the world," states Kaplan. "Here is an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful richness of Jewish music. It is a common thread that Jews around the world can share." Daniel S. Mariaschin, Executive Vice President of B'nai B'rith International, narrates the program in English. Plans are in place to launch Spanish and French versions of the network later in the year. BBI is currently in talks with several satellite radio providers regarding broadcasting the station to their subscribers.

Melodia Women's Choir Features Yehezkel Braun

Melodia Women's Choir of NYC,/b> will delight New York audiences with three exciting and rarely-performed works by Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun in its upcoming concert, November Song. The three works by the highly-regarded composer from Tel Aviv are written to songs and ballads by H.N.Bialik, Israels first national poet and one of the countrys most revered and influential writers.
The concert will be presented on November 20, 2004 at 7:30PM, at St. Peters Church in Chelsea (346 W. 20th St., between 8th and 9th Avenues) in New York City.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, the 24-member Melodia Womens Choir will perform the three works in Hebrew. Yehezkel Braun wrote the works expressly for womens voices. Rife with lyrical freshness, the Bialik ballads probe the passage of time in The Lovely Linden Tree, the wonders of natural mystery and the fears of aging in Neither Daylight Nor the Darkness, and the joy and burdens of love in With Window Opened Wide. Braun, a Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, was born in Russia and emigrated to Israel in 1922. He has taught in England, France, the United States and Germany, and is considered one of Israels finest musical treasures.

In honor of Braun, Melodia has been specially invited to concertize November Song (which also includes classical repertoire by Sir Edward Elgar, Serge Rachmaninoff and Rebecca Clarke) at Temple Sinai in Tenafly at the Sabbath service on Friday, November 19. Melodia's conductor, Cynthia Powell, serves as Organist and Choirmaster of Temple Sinai in Tenafly

New York audiences can hear November Song in a public performance on Saturday November 20, 2004 at 7:30 p.m., at the newly restored St. Peters Church, a landmark site on 346 West 20th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood.

Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanuka

Announcing the new Klezmatics cd - just in time for your holiday pleasure!
The Klezmatics: Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanuka (Klezmatics Records, 2004)

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law, the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblat, he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. He wrote songs about Hanuka, about Jewish history and spiritual life and about World War II and the antifascist cause. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. Lost for almost thirty years, Guthrie's Jewish lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody's daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. "Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanuka" is the first recorded release of this amazing material. Deftly intermingling klezmer with American folk and bluegrass, "Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hunaka" is destined to become a holiday classic for generations to come. This delightful collection of songs, "Hanuka's Flame", "Hanuka Gelt", "The Many and the Few" and others, is among the best of Guthrie's work, and the Klezmatics' playful renditions cast a new light on the Hanuka tradition. This limited edition collectors release comes in a jacket, hand printed at the Chicago Print Museum, that folds into a dreidel!

JACK GOTTLIEB CD from Milken Archive

JACK GOTTLIEB (Naxos ID 8.559433)
World Premiere Recording of Love Songs for Sabbath and Other Sabbath Compositions
Two Choral Psalm Cycles: Shout for Joy and Psalmistry
Featuring Narration by Tony-Nominated Actress Tovah Feldshuh

"...varied in mood, from joyous to serene."

— Dallas Morning News

This CD of works by award-winning contemporary composer Jack Gottlieb illustrates the fascinating interplay between Jewish religious texts and American musical idioms so emblematic of the Jewish experience in this country. Mr. Gottlieb, who served as Leonard Bernstein's assistant at the New York Philharmonic and is considered a leading authority on Bernstein's music, has woven elements of his Jewish heritage, American popular music, and the Western classical tradition throughout his creative endeavors.

For details about this CD, go to http://www.milkenarchive.org/cds/cds.taf?cdid=29

This new CD features seven works in two contrasting styles: contemplative settings of Sabbath prayers for home and synagogue balanced by lively choral pieces based on Psalm texts that celebrate life. These compositions embody Jack Gottlieb's eclectic musical style, which is marked by pungent rhythms, inventive harmonies and a typically American directness and, at the same time, reflects the influence of Jewish musical traditions and the cadences of the Hebrew language. Scored for vocal soloists, choir, organ and a variety of brass, percussion and jazz ensembles, they are sung in English and Hebrew, with readings in English.

Included is the world-premiere recording of Love Songs for Sabbath, a deeply personal setting of the Sabbath liturgy that combines the spoken word with music. The speaker is celebrated actress Tovah Feldshuh, winner of four Tony nominations for Best Actress, four Drama Desk, and numerous other awards, who is also heard in Three Candle Blessings—traditional prayers to welcome the Sabbath. A third Sabbath work, Shalom Aleikhem with Candle Blessing, combines the traditional blessing with a beloved Sabbath hymn.

Jack Gottlieb's embrace of classical and popular idioms is apparent in Psalmistry and Shout for Joy—animated, jazz-influenced choral works based on Psalm texts. Also included on this October Milken release are Set Me as a Seal, with text from the Song of Songs, and Y'varehk'kha, a setting of the Priestly Blessing.

In addition to reader Tovah Feldshuh, other featured artists are Cantor Robert Abelson, Rachel Gottlieb and Cheryl Bensman Rowe, sopranos; Kirsten Chavez, mezzo-soprano; Karl Dent and Neil Farrell, tenors; John Haspel Gilbert, violin; Harry Huff, organ; Carolina Chamber Chorale and the Southern Chorale, University of Southern Mississippi, Timothy Koch, conductor; Metropolitan Brass Ensemble, the New York Motet Choir, Stephen Sturk, conductor; and Choir of Texas Tech University, Kenneth Davis, conductor.

NEW YIDDISH/ENGLISH OPERETTA: Ballad of Monish

Marty Green productions introduces:
The Ballad of Monish
a one-man musical play
written and performed by Marty Green
Sunday Nov. 21 Berney Theater 123 Doncaster St. Winnipeg 2:00 pm/8:30 pm
Tickets: 2 for $25.00

Multi-talented Winnipeg-based interpreter of Yiddish culture Marty Green introduces his latest offering in the form of a two-hour musical play, "The Ballad of Monish", based on a classic poem by I. L. Peretz. What starts out as a Jewish retelling of the classic Faust legend quickly turns into a rollicking, satirical look at traditional Jewish attitudes towards religion, sex, and the non-Jewish world. Marty Green has taken this epic ballad and adapted it to a lively jazz-klezmer setting, interleaving his own razor-sharp English translations with the original Yiddish lyrics. There is more info on the show at http://www.onforeignsoil.com/monish.htm including an audio clip of the opening number.

Marty Green first appeared on the Yiddish scene in the year 2000 with the publication of On Foreign Soil, his masterful translation of the memoirs of Falk Zolf, with a twist: the translation starts in English and gradually turns back to Yiddish as you read it. In 2003 he followed this up with his first CD, A Boy Named Sureh, which includes Yiddish translations of such popular songs as A Boy Named Sue, Little Jimmy Brown (The Three Bells), and My Way. With The Ballad of Monish, Green hopes to introduce the humor, charm and poetry of Yiddish to a wider audience with no previous knowledge of the language. The Klezmatics have made their name by blurring the lines of tradition with a modern sonic aesthetic. Since they erupted in New York's East Village in 1986, the KLEZMATICS have spearheaded the revival of Klezmer music, reclaimed it as a contemporary form, and thrown a great party in the process. They have managed to produce more than fifteen years of consistantly excellent recordings and performances that celebrate the ecstasy of Yiddish music. Their music is by turn wild, spiritual, provocative, reflective and danceable.

The Klezmatics worked with the Woody Guthrie Archives to compose new music for a large collection of 'lost' lyrics that Guthrie wrote addressing a wide variety of Jewish themes. The group has performed the Guthrie material in venues around the world.
