Koleinu Jewish Community Chorus of Boston

Spring Concert
Join Koleinu for an evening of Jewish choral music on Thursday, June 10th, 8pm at Temple Reyim in Newton. They will be performing a concert of contemporary, liturgical, folk, and Yiddish music with special guest soloist, Cantor Charles Osborne.
Currently finishing its second complete season, Koleinu initially met in the spring of 2002. As a community chorus, Koleinu is open to anyone interested in singing Jewish choral music. It is a non-auditioned group, currently about 60 members strong. The group was founded by Cantor Scott Sokol, Director of the Jewish Music Institute at Hebrew College and Larry Kozinn, a community singer who had long hoped for the creation of just such a group. Koleinu is in residence at Hebrew College in Newton Centre. According to Cantor Sokol, the Boston community is blessed with many excellent choral groups including several that focus on Jewish music. However, he and Kozinn long felt the need to offer this repertoire in a quality musical organization to all, regardless of their previous choral experience. Early in the planning process, Sokol brought on board Carol Marton as the musical director of the group. Marton has extensive experience conducting amateur and professional choral groups in the Jewish and non-Jewish world. By all accounts, she has succeeded in creating a first-rate group in Koleinu.
Tickets to the June 10th concert at Temple Reyim will be available at the door for $10. Reyim is located at 1860 Washington Street (Rte. 16) in Newton. More information can be found on the Koleinu website: www.koleinu.com, or they can be reached at 617-559-8649 or e-mailed at koleinu@hebrewcollege.edu

YEHUDI WYNER Music on Naxos

Yehudi Wyner, a beloved teacher here at Brandeis University, has a new CD released as part of the Milken Archive project on the Naxos label.
Naxos ID 8.559423

THE MIRROR SUITE, from music for the play by Isaac Bashevis Singer (1972-3)
PASSOVER OFFERING (1959)
TANTS UN MAYSELE (1981)

Featuring: Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; Carol Wincenc, flute; Daniel Stepner, violin; Jennifer Langham and Ronald Thomas, cello; James Guttman, double bass; Bruce Creditor, clarinet; David Taylor, bass trombone; Robert Shulz, percussion; Carol Meyer, soprano; Judi Brown Kirchner, mezzo-soprano; Matthew Kirchner, tenor; Richard Lalli, baritone; Yehudi Wyner, speaker and piano.

This release features world-premiere recordings of three evocative works by leading contemporary composer Yehudi Wyner. The Mirror, a play by Isaac Bashevis Singer, explores the interior life of a Jewish woman living in a small eastern European town. The surrealistic plot, which in terms of religious orthodoxy could be considered subversive, mixes themes of sexual repression and fantasy, presided over by a demon who haunts the woman's mirror. Wyner's atmospheric music for this drama is inspired by various Jewish traditions, including secular folk and religious song, the music of klezmer bands, and modal echoes of Sephardi and Near Eastern Jewry. Also included on this CD are two instrumental works: Passover Offering-a reflection on the biblical story-and the folklore-inspired Tants un Maysele (Dance and Little Story).

NEW INTERVIEW ON THE MILKEN ARCHIVE WEBSITE

A new interview with composer Yehudi Wyner and clarinetest Richard Stoltzman is featured on the homepage of the Milken Archive Web site.

CANTOR BENZION MILLER SINGS CANTORIAL CONCERT MASTERPIECES

Milken Archive Releases
CANTOR BENZION MILLER SINGS CANTORIAL CONCERT MASTERPIECES
Naxos ID 8.559416

Featuring: Cantor Benzion Miller, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra/National Orchestra of Catalonia, conductor Elli Jaffe, Vienna Boys Choir, Chorus Viennensis

This recording of cantorial concert masterpieces celebrates a unique genre of Jewish sacred music that embodies the virtuoso cantorial tradition. With a blend of brilliant vocal technique and deep spirituality that is a prerequisite for performance of this demanding repertoire, tenor Benzion Miller, a renowned fourth-generation cantor dedicated to perpetuating this legacy, brings to life treasures from the "Golden Age" of cantor-composers in America (1920s-1940s), in completely new recordings with full symphony orchestra. Such legendary figures as David Roitman, David Kusevitsky, Moshe Ganchoff, Leib Glantz and Israel Schorr, among others, are represented by these sophisticated settings of liturgical texts that were intended for concert performance rather than rendition of prayer in the synagogue.

4th Open Workshop of MUSICNETWORK

Call for Proposal, Papers, Expositions
Integration of Music in Multimedia Applications
http://www.interactivemusi cnetwork.org/events/Fourth_OpenWorkshop_2004/MUSICNETWORK-4th-Open-Works hop-plan-v1-2.html http://www.interactivemusicnetwork.org/
Read on for more information:

Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain
15th-16th September 2004
http://dmag.u pf.es/wedelmusic2004/Documents/Location.html Co-located with WEDELMUSIC 2004 Conference: http://www.upf.edu/wedelmusic2004/
You are invited to participate at the Workshop and to contribute to the sessions.
With the support of the European Commission, the MUSICNETWORK project has been created to explore the applications and integration of interactive multimedia technologies for Music, enabling inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations and networking, bridging many important sectors, including cultural, commercial, industrial, research and academic. End users are discovering the multimedia experience, and thus, traditional music models are going to be overcome and replaced by their integration with multimedia, audiovisual and cross media. Thus the aim is to put together industry actors and innovative technology providers to help the music industry to overcome the present problems with the innovation.

The theme of the 4th Open Workshop is the Integration of Music in Multimedia applications. Currently many new music-related applications are strongly impacting and attracting the market. Most of them will become more and more widespread in a short time due to users’ demand. Among most addressed sectors the one presenting more notable form of integration between music and multimedia there are: · music education (notation tools integrating multimedia, educational paradigms, tools, distance learning, mobile learning, etc.); · music management in libraries (modeling, navigation, metadata, content description, etc., MPEG-7), · entertainment (animation, synchronisation, etc., SMIL ); · music and multimedia music distribution and protection (watermarking, fingerprint, MPEG-21); · valorization of cultural heritage (modeling, restring, etc.); · electronic consumer applications: piano keyboards with symbolic music representation and audiovisual capabilities, electronic lecterns, i-TV; · mobile applications for education and entertainment (cellular phones, PDA, tablet PC, etc.).

In the current Internet and Multimedia age other applications are strongly attracting market attention and most of them will become soon widespread in short time. The integration of symbolic music representation in MPEG could completely satisfy users’ requirements for properly handling such issue into tools, allowing to integrate into a single model the powerful one of MPEG for multimedia, representation, coding and playback. The integration of symbolic music representation with MPEG or other multimedia standards will open the way for a large number of new applications and markets related to the above applications. This initiative may increase the current market for symbolic music representation, which is mainly dedicated to sheet music production. It may also open the path to creating very interesting new applications, and to increase the power and flexibility of those applications that already use both multimedia and symbolic music representation. MPEG has relevant standards in this area such as MPEG-4 for the audio visual objects, MPEG-7 for the description of audio visual content for archives, and MPEG-21 for the Digital Rights Management and distribution of digital audiovisual.

At present, there is a lack of an integrated Music Notation/Representation standard with multimedia. The aim of this workshop is to make a further step towards a proper standardizing of a Music Notation/Representation Model. The MUSICNETWORK has worked very hard to create the conditions for a Call for Proposals/Technologies within MPEG with the aim of exploiting the MPEG framework for integrating Music Notation/Representation in several innovative applications. As a results an MPEG Ad Hoc Group on Symbolic Music Representation has been created, a large set of requirements and innovative applications have been identified and a call for technology can be launched. All this material can be recovered from: · http://www.interactive musicnetwork.org/mpeg-ahg/ · http://www.interactivemusicnetwork.org/mpeg-ahg/W6457%20%28Draft%20CfP%2 0Symbolic%20Music%20Representation%29.doc

To this end, the next Open Workshop of the MUSICNETWORK will be mainly focused on the integration of MUSIC and MULTIMEDIA in an effective CROSS MEDIA. Several different formats and media may share the same information and grant navigation, synchronization and stable relationships establishment.

The 4th Open Workshop will be organized around the following sections. For each section we are open to receive proposals and contributions: · Applications and Technical papers, chairs: Jerome Barthelemy (IRCAM, Jerome.Barthelemy@ircam.fr), David Crombie (FNB, dcrombie@fnb.nl), David Fuschi (ILABS, d.fuschi@giuntilabs.it), Giuseppe Nicotra (ARCA, nicotra@dodiesis.com). Film: DIVAN

Pearl Gluck's film with music by Frank London will be shown again at the Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday, June 24, 8pm & Sunday, June 27, 2pm. Worth seeing (and the music is good!).
From Jewish Film Festival's press release:
DIVAN
Pearl Gluck
USA/Hungary, 2003
77 min., Video
English/Yiddish/Hungarian w/subtitles

Director Pearl Gluck takes a renegade approach to healing a personal breach with her father. Raised in a Hassidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, she travels to her family's homeland, Hungary. She searches for a turn-of-the-century family heirloom, a couch upon which revered rebbes once slept. Bringing back this couch, or divan, she hopes, will compensate her father for the fact that she did not get married and return to the Hassidic world. En route to the ancestral divan, Pearl encounters a colorful cast of characters. A chorus of Pearl's friends, all former Orthodox Jews actively reclaiming Jewish culture, frame the tale. Divan is a marvelous visual parable in which reupholstering a couch stands as a means of reclaiming family heritage.

GOLDEN HORN RELEASES "VERETSKI PASS"

Cookie Segelstein: Violin, scordatura violin, viola
Joshua Horowitz: Chromatic button accordion, tsimbl
Stuart Brotman: Bass, basy, baraban

Golden Horn Records is proud to announce its release of Veretski Pass, Traditional East European Jewish Music by the trio of the same name made up of klezmer veterans Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz and Stuart Brotman. Much of the music on this recording comes from and near the region of the Veretski Pass (after which the group is named) in the Transcarpathian region of what is now Ukraine, the main crossroads through which the Jews traversed the Carpathian Bow. Some melodies were passed on to Cookie by her father who was born in the town of Nizhni Veretski, at the base of this pass. Others were collected by the members themselves in their travels throughout Eastern Europe. Much of the music on this CD is recorded for the first time. The instruments used on this recording are largely 19th Century versions of the violin, viola, 3 stringed bass, basy (3 stringed polish folk cello), bayan (early chromatic button accordion), tsimbl (Jewish hammered dulcimer) and baraban (Jewish bass drum). Website: www.goldenhorn.com more about Veretski Pass...

There is a stunning suite of Crimean Tatar music which is both haunting and virtuosic. The Crimean Tatars are considered one of the three indigenous peoples of the Crimean Peninsula. Hoping to strip the Crimean Tatars of their ethnicity, Stalin eliminated close to half of their population and decimated their cultural institutions. The Tatars therefore viewed the German occupation of Crimea as their last hope of survival. The Nazis in turn saw this as a unique opportunity to turn other Russian minorities against Stalin, so they declared the Tatars a people and recorded their folk music on 78 r.p.m discs. These recordings were made available to Verestki Pass by Prof. Martin Schwartz (from the collection of Dr. Zev Feldman) and reappear here for the first time in a new interpretation.
There is also a rare Karaite song, followed by improvisations and a pyrotechnic fiddle song performed on a scordatura violin. The Karaite Jews accept only the written word of the Old Testament and reject the rabbinical Oral Commentaries. As a people, they have also been brutally subjugated by their neighbors and spurned by the Jewish Community at large. Their music has been kept close to their culture.
There are also original compositions, a suite with a bass and viola duet, traditional Jewish and Ukrainian dance tunes all accompanied by booklet with rich photographs and finely wrought essays by each of the members of the trio, making this album a treasure trove of sound and word. This is truly a creative and powerful use of a small group of players who make music reminiscent of raucous and confident village musicians, nothing short of a redefinition of the genre we now call klezmer.
GOLDEN HORN RECORDS is a World Music and Jazz label established in 1995 and based in California.

TORONTO JEWISH FOLK CHOIR’S 78TH SPRING CONCERT

Choir with BEYOND THE PALE, SUNDAY, MAY 16
The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir adds the infectious klezmer sounds of Beyond the Pale to its 78th annual spring concert Sunday, May 16, 3 p.m. at Lawrence Park Collegiate, Lawrence Ave. W., two blocks east of Avenue Road (limited free parking at the school).
Tickets, $22 ($18 seniors and students; children under 12 free; group rates on request), are available at the door, or in advance from Jewish bookstores, or by calling 416-489-7681. More information is at http://www.winchevskycentre.org/choir.html and...

Now in his second year as conductor, Alexander Veprinsky directs the Choir, soloists and Beyond the Pale in an afternoon of memorable melody. Soloists are soprano Miriam Eskin, tenor Mark Fox and bass Herman Rombouts. Pianist is Lina Zemelman.
Highlight is the choral ballade Benyomin der driter (Benjamin the Third) by Max Helfman (1901-63), a musical adaptation of the classic novel by the “Grandfather of Yiddish Literature,” Mendele Moikher Sforim. Maestro Veprinsky has created an original orchestration for the musicians. TV personality Larry Solway will knit the sections together with narration in both English and Yiddish - his first venture into Yiddish narration.
Also on the program is an eclectic mix of songs on Jewish themes, in Yiddish, Hebrew, Judeo-Spanish, Russian and English.
The concert is dedicated to the memory of three people associated with the choir, who died in February 2004 – Canada’s music man Nicholas Goldschmidt, who showcased the Choir in three music festivals in recent years; long-time Toronto Symphony Orchestra cellist Robert Spergel, who arranged a spiritual the Choir performed in 2003; and Bella Shek, who was an ardent singer and executive member from her arrival in Canada in 1934 until into her 90s, and who died just short of her 103rd birthday.
Conductor Alexander Veprinsky graduated from the Mykola Lysenko Lviv State Conservatory in Ukraine in operatic and symphonic conducting. He is also a gifted pianist and arranger. Arriving in Canada in 1993, he became assistant conductor, and in 1995 musical director, of Toronto’s Shevchenko Ensemble and the driving force behind its School of Performing Arts, founded in 1996. He joined the Folk Choir in 2002.

Kabala by Matthew Fields

Turning elements from "Chad Gadya" interleaved with Rosh Hashanah themes in a trombone brass quartet canonic segment is only one of the many interesting twists of the compositions of Matthew H. Fields recording Kabala. Fields has several 'classical' music pieces all with extremely unusual uses of Jewish thematic content. The above description comes from "Call of the Shofar" (1992) which is set for tenor trombones, and bass trombone. And I'll bet you've never heard a carillon performing the Sh'ma as the base tune (cantus firmus) of a toccata. "A carillon is a frame of beams and girder to which 23 or more bells are bolted" ...so it's something like playing a xylophone and organ at the same time, only bells ringing...of course that's not the end... Then there's Kabala (1993) which is an intriguing composition for clarinet, viola and piano, and a mood piece I liked a lot for it's mystery and lyrical qualities. This is all available on MMC 2087 Recording http://www.mmcrecordings.com/detail.asp?id=87. To learn more about Matthew Field, visit the composer's website: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~fields/complist.html This is all pretty good music and especially for those who are fans of new compositions that's not too dissonant or pointillistic, but has strong interest, with an eye on beauty of sound, you will defintiely enjoy this composer's music.

Hodu Lashem by Devora Gila

Devora Gila
Israeli. Singer/Songwriter. Devora Gila, a frum vocalist, whose recordings are marked for "women only", has one of the hippest religious recordings around, Hodu Lashem (2003). Devora has a wonderful, sweet voice. Her co-producer, Naor Carmi also worked on the arrangements which utilize not only contemporary settings, but a variety of styles from Israel-- from modern, to Arab, to classical guitar and Spanish influenced, to contemporary-easy. Particularly nice is the original song "Beloved", based on Song of Songs. Devora's CD is accessible music for anyone and is available at CD Baby http://www.cdbaby.com/devoragila. Lag B'Omer in Ithaca, NY

Ithaca: On Saturday, May 8th, promptly at 10 pm (after Shabbat), the Carriage House Café will present an evening of Jewish instrumental Klezmer music and Hasidic song as a part of the 'Crossing Borders' multi-cultural radio concert series, soon to be aired regularly on WVBR. Featured artists include Joel Rubin (clarinet, musical direction), Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl -- Eastern European Jewish hammered dulcimer), Rabbi Eli Silberstein (song and story) and The Cornell Klezmer Ensemble. The concert will be in honor of the Jewish festival of Lag Ba'Omer, which begins at sundown on that day. Lag Ba'Omer marks the 33rd day of the seven-week partial mourning period between the holidays of Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot, and is only day during this period where weddings, dancing and public performances of music are allowed to take place according to traditional Judaism.

Joel Rubin is currently a Mellon Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Music Department at Cornell University. For over two decades he has been one of the leading figures in the klezmer movement as performer, scholar, author and educator. Rubin directs the internationally acclaimed Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble, and was a founder of Brave Old World. He has documented the music of traditional musicians such as the Epstein Brothers, recipients of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA in 1998, and Moshe Berlin, Israel's most prominent klezmer clarinetist, performing together with them. Rubin studied with Richard Stoltzman and Kalmen Opperman and holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from City University (London).
Rubin is joined by Pete Rushefsky of Syracuse and Rabbi Eli Silberstein of Ithaca in a performance of Eastern European klezmer music and hasidic nigunim. Rushefsky is a leading revivalist of the tsimbl. Rabbi Silberstein has played an integral role in Ithaca's spiritual life for over two decades, and is an acknowledged expert on hasidic nigunim. Also featured on the program will be the newly formed Cornell Klezmer Ensemble under Rubin's direction. The ensemble, made up of Cornell students, staff and faculty, Ithaca College students, and other members of the Ithaca community, will be performing music representing the New York and Philadelphia klezmer traditions, drawing on repertoire as it was performed there during the 1910s and 1920s.
The performance begins promptly at 10 PM (after sunset) and will be recorded for a future broadcast of "Crossing Borders", a multi-cultural concert series that will begin airing weekly in June on 93.5FM, WVBR. The series will take place at the newly renovated Carriage House Café and will eventually be broadcast live. Denice Karamardian is the host of the series. Radio personality Aron Gutman will co-host for the Klezmer presentation.
The Carriage House Café will officially open for business in September of 2004. The mission of the Café is to promote multi-cultural exchange and awareness by providing hospitality and entertainment to the local and international community through cultural presentation of arts, music, cuisine and educational programming (often in collaboration with various community, corporate and university partners). The Carriage House Café is located at 304 Stewart Avenue, Ithaca.
